Lightbulb Lq4 build. Opinions with my parts.

What's up

I got a 99 z vert. With the engine out from the top. I got a lq4 block to bore and guess need to buy a crank. Lq4 from a 99 HD with the long crank. I got 243 heads, an ls6 intake and a ls3 valley pan, and zr1 cam. I want to put the ls1 in my jet boat with the lq4 intake and oilpan, it will need the crank turned. Cam and valley pan were cheap. I may not even use them. Will the valley pan fit the lq4 and will it be ok to have the knock sensors unplugged? Does the zr1 cam not read the cam sensor in back? I don't understand why the face plate and 4gen sensor needs used? Thanks for your input.

Zr1 is a cam that reads from the front, all you need to do is get a 4th gen front cover and extend your existing sensor

Since your doing it. You might as well throw a stroker kit in there. Instead of the zr1 cam I would just get a cam made for the gen 3 motor like a 224-228...the extra cubes will really tame the can down and drive like stock.

I got 100 in the cam and 30 in the valley cover. I seen some stroker kits on ebay around 1400 but I'm not sure of the brand name. Looks like mismatches but 4340 forged I believe. I agree and know what needs to be done. 250 for a crank kit and 350 for pistons what's 50% more for a forged 408 rite. How about the valley cover? Ls6 intake needs this but ls3 doesn't allow sensors. So must I run the knock sensors and buy a ls6 valley cover. And I still don't understand the cam. It has a magnet in front instead of rear or what. Is there something in the cam for the sensor? New cam you got to get a front or rear sensor cam?

The cam has a "gear" ground into it for the cam position sensor to read....on the gen 3 style it is on the back of the can and sensor mounts in the block right behind the intake.
On the gen 4 style the gear is on the front of the cam and the sensor is mounted in the front cover.

Can you run without knock sensors? Yes, but I would highly recomend against it.

I'd pick up and run the ls6 valley cover...plus after everything is said and done with buying the front cover and the other little parts to run the gen4 cam you could have a gen3 style cam paid for....might want to check the classified section for a good used one

Why not use the crank out of your ls1 in the 6.0 and the long crank in your jet boat? No reason to waste money on another crank when you already have 2

I hear you on the long crank in the jet boat. I just hate to build around it and want to put that motor in another car and then wish I had not. Truth is I may. Ls1 spun one. So I may take it to regrind. It looks deep. I'm lucky to have this car as a non daily driver and with that being said I ain't got it to drop 60% of what I got in a car to get 33% more hp. Although it doesn't sound that bad spelled out? Lol

Long crank with the flat flex plate is The same as the short crank with the dished flex plate. The problem people run into is The flat flex plate only has the standard bolt pattern for the 4l80e or th400.

I'm sorry. Come back on that? I haven't looked side by side yet. Today I tore the ls1 down to the point of needing a pulley puller for the balancer. Your saying the bolt pattern is different? But the same position out the back? Then why the spacers for some? I about to get machine work done. I'll turn the short and polish the long one if that's it. So what starter do I use?

The ls1 uses the short crank with a concave flex plate that moves the torque converter mounting holes out .400 and has the metric bolt pattern for the 4l60e converter.

The lq4 you have uses the long crank with a flat flex plate that puts the torque converter mounting locations in the same place but has a standard torque converter bolt pattern to mate up to the 4l80e.

It was a cheap out on GM's part. They carried the 4l80e and all it's components over from the older trucks with 350's and 454's. They worked the flex plate and crank over to just slap the existing 4l80e and converter behind an ls engine. When in reality, had they just changed the converter in the 6.0 years of trucks they would have been able to use the short crank and same flex plate the 4l60e vehicles used.
