Posted a bit back bout getting my car goin after taking a break for 9yrs due to life, worked the bugs outta the efi , had a bad computer from sitting so long In the heat.. Anyway, details of my experiment:
29k mile 6.0 escalade short block
Super Vic with 4bbl tb
Milled 317's .075 no port work , stock valves
250/250 HYd roller specd by my buddy Bret Bauer..
Coan 5k stall 8" converter
Th400
S60 with 4.56 's
All tuned by me..
All in all I'm satisfied with how it all turned out, ESP for the minimal $$$ I have in the conbo.. The sheets std car made 450sae for the sae guys, this is the first sheet he printed...

How big a tire you running with those 456's and how high do u plan on spinning the motor? Great job on a fairly low budget motor!

The torque doesn't look right. Peak looks low, but it looks like it was low everywhere else.

I'd be interested in seeing what happens when the cam is advanced a couple degrees, if there is enough P-V.

IllusionalTA

I can do that fairly easily, my buddy used to own a dyno, and this wouldn't have a been a issue to play around.. P2v shouldn't be a issue.. i got room +/-10 deg.. :)

damn, So what about intake alignment? No issues? We milled 317's down .060" and had to fix the bolt holes on the intake. Bolts were going on sideways but it was worth it. 464rwhp.

Just a update , I jumped in on a rental yesterday.. Never installed any of my rear suspension stuff. So I paid for it.. Either way was a good time.. Car went a best if 10.51@128 with a 1.47.. Rear of car wouldn't hold any more.. And my rims were spinning in my tires.. Made 16 hits, and had a blast..

Can you tell me a little more about your combo....?
Standalone?

From what I have seen anything over .075 has PTV clearance issues... Were the pistons Flycut?

What was the weight of the car?

I am currently starting to gather parts to build my own LQ4 or LQ9 and this budget build is just what I am trying to duplicate.... in a 3100lb Mustang of course

Car weighs 3570 with me in it.. Pistons are flycut, running a stock PCM.. I have throw the car back on dyno, to ensure my afr and timing is optimal as I had to crank limiter up to 7k to get through traps, just did it safely to get through the day..

I am subscribed to you. I am going to be running almost the same combo as you, however mine will be this:

370ci LQ9 @ 9.06:1 compression
AFR 225cc w/ 72cc chambers
Custom grind 236/232 114LSA cam
Pacesetter 1.75 headers
Edelbrock Pro-flo XT intake
TH400 with Cicle D 5K stall
Moser 9" with 3.50 gear

I only hope I could dyno as much as you did, and also hope I could get a sixty foot as good as yours.

I am just shooting for a goal of 6's in the 1/8th N/A.

Good luck on the rest of your build!

I have a feeling my 3.50 gear is going to be what kills me, I wish I had 4.56's like you. But this car is ultimately a turbo build car, so I need to stick with the 3.50's. :(

I didn't intend to come off as a ass... Just feel you setup is yards ahead of mine, and should perform pretty good as well, your just giving up a ton of power since your mostly designed for boost, running NA... I'm gonna spray next season, so hopefully can hang w/ some of these faster car's.. :)

Sorry, I guess I came off as an ass too. Just thought you were being sarcastic, because in all seriousness, I think my motor would probably only dyno a tick above 400 to the wheel right now. At least that is what my butt dyno and my trap speed tell me. I am leaving alot of the table with this low of compression, like you said. But I am just kinda in limbo between turbo builds, and I still want to race my car at the track, so I guess it is what it is right now.

Good luck with your car, I will be following like I said! :)

The torque doesn't look right. Peak looks low, but it looks like it was low everywhere else.

I'd be interested in seeing what happens when the cam is advanced a couple degrees, if there is enough P-V.

The peak might be low but its definitely not at a low rpm - it is around 5800-6000 which means that the peak hp (if the induction/tune/valvetrain) is right should have been @ around 7300-7500... hmm should be more left in this combo if that is correct. Advancing the cam as mentioned looks like your next best move if you can.

It is either running out of flow, floating the valves, the tune or a combination of these three that is keeping it from peaking and I am sure you don't want to spin that stock short that high regardless. Don't get me wrong its ripping for sure just curious whats going based on that dyno graph.

What rpm are you shifting at?

IllusionalTA
01-05-2013, 08:49 PM
Had float, but swapped out the springs, and haven't gone back to the dyno since, I'm shifting currently 63-6500 and running it out the back @7k.. It's a out the box super Vic, stock castings.. I do have the ability to advance the cam, if I desire, this was just a interesting experiment.. I may throw it back on to play with the tune a bit, I'm pretty sure the float is gone and power might have a lil carried better.. Only went to track once, and despite the shitty 60 It was dead nuts consistent.. And reliable.. Gotta screw my rims, and ditch the stock shocks.. I'm putting heads on over the winter so, I'll never get to push this combo as far as I can take it.. But it sure was fun...

It's a 8" coan.. Flashes to 5300 or so..

So as I figured you ran the car after you made the changes to the valvetrain. This would better explain why the listed RWHP and weight don't quite match the performance (mainly the mph) especially considering it was its first outing and the issues you mentioned.

Makes sense to me now.

Now go run some single digits with the new combo!

IllusionalTA
01-05-2013, 11:23 PM
Yea still haven't optimized the tune either , fuel was safe on the log, added a deg upstairs at the track it answered with another mph.. I'm sure I have some more power left up top , and still might run this combo when the tracks open up in early march .. Depending on if we move my shop where I put my junk together or not.. Ill keep this thread updated, I've heard it would run like shit when I mentioned this lil odd combo that I was gonna try.. Needless to say , I'm pleased with how it turned out .. This top ends goin onto my lil brothers 346.. Should be interesting

Martin@Tick
01-05-2013, 11:37 PM
Keep giving it a degree of timing after peak torque until it levels off gaining mph, back it off a degree and if it doesn't slow down any call it good.

Interesting enough usually those most vocal about why it will not work either have never tried it themselves or better yet understand why it did in fact work.

Yea the terrible part is living on Long Island with no place to go test locally , and frequently.. It's a excursion to hit the track.. And a small fortune in tolls.. Miss having Mir in my back yard ..

Well oddly enough the guy claiming it wouldn't work in all his ls1tech post count glory , hasn't said a word.. Whatever.. It's fun polishing a turd!

Hey Illusional, I am just curious, because I am also street tuning my car myself with HPtuners, how much timing are you running in WOT at 5K and up? Feel free to PM me if you would like. I am currently working on the timing in my car. Thanks! :)

IllusionalTA

93camaro_zzz
01-09-2013, 09:06 AM
Thanks! Yeah I was thinking I could get at least a degree or two more with my low compression. I am only at 26* right now, but it is definitely not finished and I knew that. And I got really mad when I went to the track expecting to get alot of full WOT runs logged and get some really good WOT timing tuning done, but my laptop decided to die that day. So it is back to street tuning for right now until I hit the track again.

Thanks again.

Finally got around to strapping it back down see if in fact the float was gone with only change being the addition of PAC 1521's over the patriot extremes I had in there previously.. Float went away, and was rewarded with a additional 17whp.. Upto 477.. I'll take it.. These 317's are beast... Fwiw I'm only runnin 26.5* of timing still.. Was squeezing in on a buddies dyno time for my touch up.. Didn't really dig in... Here's the video
