View Full Version : My new motor is broke!

So I built an LS3 for my Z06. My LS6 had 10K original miles, but with twin turbos it was only a matter of time until it blew.

So I bit the bullet and built a stout LS3. This included forged internals, heads prepped by West Coast Cylinder Heads, turbo cam, etc.

I put the motor in the car, broke the motor in and took it to the track. Pulled it off the trailer and started the engine, and a rod knock.

So 8 grand later, it is back out of the car, and the crank is trash.

Just venting! This sucks!

Damn that sucks. Did you build the motor?

no I had my machine shop do it, I was really pushing them hard to get it done for a race, but now it has cost me alot

See if the machine shop will cover it...

Time for a junkyard 5.3/6.0

When you broke it in, were you easy on it and did the oil changes as necessary? Just seeing if there is a way that the machine shop wouldn't cover it.

I dont care if they were rushed or not. They should pay for that. I doubt they will but its a brand new motor and they built it.

Ill try and find you another ls3, hopefully I can get in contact with the Guy that bought the ls3 from the recked Corvette. I'm sure you have more connects then me but ill try.

Either tune or someone messed up on measuring their bearing clearances...

Sorry to hear that. My investment wasn't that much but enough to hurt me. It really sucks when you try hard to make things happen but ends up in a sour note.

Sorry for not getting back earlier, work has been busy. The machine shop is diffidently standing behind it but, that doesn't cover the costs of pulling it, reinstall etc.

Not RPM built motor, reputable shop, but I would rather not say.

I don't know how it could be tune, the motor was fired in the garage, ran for 20 minutes at 2500 RPM, oil changed and put on a trailer and taken to the track.

this is the exact reason i use junkyard motors, seen too many forged motors die to quickly

Rpm built motor?
pretty quick to past judgement, got to love the cms fanboys, willing to talk shit about everybody else at any chance given

Build the engine properly and tune it properly and this isnt an issue at all. Simple as that. Makes no matter what the engine cost one single bit. Forged engines die because someone killed it. They are a hell of a lot more stout than a junkyard crap shot or new OEM LS3. Sounds like the builder screwed the pooch on this if he is covering it. Never seen a builder pay for a tuner's mistake

yes the builder said if it is their fault they will take care of it. I have had a few motors built for my personal cars. Never once when the builder made a mistake have they covered parts, but if they will cover machining and provide some parts, ie a crank then I will be pleased this time around.

Thanks for the support, I will hopefully have it back up and running in the next few weeks

LOL a RPM guy I am guessing. Been around a long time and seen plenty of different shop's builds go boom. I actually have talked to this guy at a show in person and I know RPM was a consideration to build the motor.

Yes your right a junkyard motor is much better then a nicely built Forged motor :jest:

We cant turn into honda racers blowing up junk motors at the track every week. Lol. My L92 was a very low mileage used shortblock but you can bet that when it gets tired, forged parts will be in the plans. A motor dying that quick had an existing issue. When done right a forged motor should be damn near bulletproof.
