Cadillac CTS-V - Belt tensioner for supercharged cars?

So, my tensioner on my maggied V bounces like crazy at idle and the belt slips at high RPM's. All the ones I see say not to use them on a blower motor.

So...?

Magnuson has an upgraded tension pulley.

Don't know if you are already running it.

I don't either. Does it come with the maggie kit? Or is it an extra? I wonder if that's what's on it...

Either way, it's wimpy. :)

It replaces the one that came with the kit.

You might call them.

I will see about posting a pic of mine.

Yeah, since you mentioned it, I googled... :) Thanks!

It looks like it's a Dayco PN 38131 that Magnuson supplies.

Wonder if there's anything stronger?

Why does Katech and the like advise against a non-sprung tensioner for supercharged cars?

East Coast Superchargers has one too. That's what I run.

Yeah, I ordered this tensioner. It is the 38131 tensioner mentioned above. The thing that pissed me off is that, this tensioner was the same one I already had, and I just needed the bracket. Magnuson wouldn't sale the bracket separately. So in essence, I paid $80 for a bracket, as the tensioner is only $34 on Amazon. Oh, and you need your own pulley also as it won't come with one.

Well, I got the Dayco 38131 tensioner today at NAPA. 65 bucks. Came with a huge pulley on it. Looks to be a direct bolt in... Will take pics in a little while as I install it. It is BEEFY! :)

Too bad it doesn't fit. :(

http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/2012-08-20161842.jpg

The beefiness of the "arm" doesn't fit in the mounting bracket. I'd have to clearance the mount... A LOT. Like a 1/2" or so. Not gonna do that. I think I need the strength there. It looks like a different design than posted above. The arm is on the backside (block side) of the tensioner instead of the front side (radiator side) so there is no room for it. Has anyone else run into this? Design change to cover more vehicles perhaps?

And FYI, that is a GATES number, not a DAYCO one. I got it at NAPA as their house brand. But further investigation and cross referencing showed it as a Gates product.

And... That stock (?) tensioner was one tough son of a bitch! I had to get out a breaker bar to release the tension on it. So why does it do this at idle:

Can someone else with a maggie go look at yours at idle, or better yet, grab a video? Does it move? Mine actually moves quite a bit more than the video captured. Damn cell phone videos! ;)

Grrrr.

I have the 38131 tensioner and bracket from Magnuson, and that tensioner moves quite a bit too when I had my car idling.

It looks like you will have to get bent over too, by Magnason and buy the tensioner and bracket from them. Also, that pulley is not the correct one. Just take the pulley off of your other tensioner.

Does the magnuson one just come with a large fender washer for the backside?

No. The bracket is different.

Ok, I think this answers my question from an old thread:

This was on an 04 Maggied V and looks exactly like the gates on Amazon. I guess you need to use your old pulley.

You can see where he clearanced the bracket like I said I was going to have to to make it fit.

So I guess I do have to do some trimming. :turd:

And for future reference, the application is a ford E150/F150. Not sure the year range though.

no don't trim you're bracket, it won't work
you can purchase the new bracket for the larger belt tensioner from magnuson seperately, just tell them you need the HD tensioner bracket. you have an older maggie kit (like I have) and this is the new tensioner and bracket they now sell, good luck

you need to swap the pulley over and on a side note I was able to press the new pulley bearing from the larger pulley to swap my worn bearing on the old tensioner pulley

It's funny that you linked that thread because that's where i quoted that picture above from! :D You can clearly see in that pic where he clearanced his bracket slightly for that tensioner to fit. Look at the raised lip of the mount at the base of the arm of the tensioner. See how it's not a smooth radius? It curves up like an 1/8" and then slants flat? That's where he clearanced it to allow the room for that tensioner. I have the same mount and gates tensioner here. I will try clearancing it and report back. :)

Can anyone post a vid of their tensioner at idle for me please? :)

I bought the Magnuson Tensioner last week. They would not sell me the bracket separately.

soulja that stinks, maybe they changed their protocol, but it was $36 including the new hardware. maybe try another sales rep? I'm on the road or i'd try and get you the part #

toyz, the bracket is not a modified original it is a different bracket sold by magnuson, they are the ones who supply the bracket for that specific tensioner
