Hi, I have a M6 O2 Z28. So far I have the K&N FIPK, Flowmaster exhaust, 160 thermostat, Fan mod, TB bypass. From suspension I have the SS 17" wheels with stock tires, bilstein shocks, eibach springs, banhard rod, control arms and relocation brackets. What do I need to beat a 01 Cobra with no supercharger. The guy I'm going to race in about 2 weeks is a friend of mine and just bought the car. He doesn't want to race now so I think he's going to put in nitrous, exhaust and headers from his previous mustang. What do I need to beat him even after his mods. I have between 1,000 to 1,500$ to spend for mods. I would appreciate your suggestions.

i agree with 2001 White TA, why can't you run nitrous too? If you dont want to go that way, some ported amd polished heads maybe and a cam? Depending how much money you have.

You should be able to beat him .. It takes some work for an 01 Mustang to beat a LS1 .

Personally...i wouldnt be too worried about a non-supercharged cobra. Anything he can do you can do better.

i dunno ive heard the 99 and 01 cobra motors were dogs, they only put out about as much as the 2v GT did. a buddy of mine has an 02 GT vert with LT's, flowmasters, intake, 3.73's,and a shifter and i was riding in the car with him one day and a yellow 99 cobra pulled up to us at a light and tossed us a rev, and they were off, my buddy got a jump off him from the start and slowly pulled on him till about 80-90mph. anyways, my buddy in the GT will be about 4-5 car lengths behind me at 100mph when we run em, and it gets a lot worse after 100. the cobra's 4V has a lot of top end. but honestly i dont think you'll have a prob.

Thanks for the fast replies. So about how much will headers nitrous and cams cost me and what 1/4 time should I have with that setup and 100 shot of nitrous on nitto drag radials. Also what kind of cams should I get and are they hard to install? So far my fastest time was 13.1 at 108mph but that was when I had my stock 16" wheels and tires. Sorry for all those questions but I need to beat this guy. I beat him before when I had my 97 z28 and he had his 98 GT and he lost so now he wants to get back at me.

Get the NX kit for the LS1. $500 and you will be on your way. Hve the car dyno tuned($400) and that is all you'll need.

look in the fs section for a nice nitrous kit and buy a set of Nitto 555r's. insta 11 second pass if you need it

01 cobras were actually 13.2 to 13.5 second cars... the 99 were dogs. You should not have much to worry about. Cam and tires and you are good to go, or tires, nitrous and headers and you should destroy this car!

I'm not sure if that's a typo, but if it's not, you should be aware that your car only has one cam. I've haven't installed one yet but you'll probably need to buy a tool to keep the pushrods from falling through once you get the old cam out. I belive www.installuniversity.com has a good write-up about installing an aftermarket cam. The type of cam you get should complement everything else you do. If you're going to go with heads later, you should get a cam that's made to work with them. Or if you're going with nitrous you'll need a cam that works well with it. I would use the search function on this site in the Internal Engine section for more info about cams, or else post this there for better responses.

Aren't the Cobra's supposed to be weak without steep gears? 4.11s, 4.30s, 4.56s? Anyone else back me up as i'm not completely sure.

I agree with 1fasta! With $1000, get a nitrous system(try to go wet) and get a good dyno tune. With the extra $$$ definetely DR's!

I think you can take him the way you are. I raced a H/C, geared, intake, 100 shot late 80's Mustang and ran pretty even with him before my cam and long tubes. You should do better than I did because you have a M6. Race him and bust his ***. One thing, get sticky tires!

Heh, 01 Cobra wont be so bad, he has IRS, cant launch as well. Without low gears he wont be too much of a threat. However with the nitrous, what shot is he running, 125? I've heard bad things about nitrous on cobras. If I were you man, get a used NX kit for like $300 dollars and run a 125 shot. If you got time I would get longtubes and a cut out as well. Let us know how it turns out, be safe.

like i already said, the 01 cobra is not a turd. they are almost the same thing as the new mach 1, just the mach is using the mercury marauder dohc 4.6 motor.

they will run very WELL. in the 13.2 area to 13.5 bone stock. They do run better with a 4.10 in the car though!

Im surprised some of you will not take my word for it. I can tell you what ford product sucks and what will run half assed.

Look into a nice cam, some sticky tires and a little bit of dope. You will be good to go to bust that pony's ***!
