Default Damage to axle (?)

I replaced the axle bearings in my 98 TA and then sprung a leak, I'm guessing I went 15 miles with little or no diff fluid. The bearings got noisy and when I pulled it back apart one of the rollers was missing from the bearing.

I've put new bearings in already, but I've read multiple threads that say if there's pitting then the axle is toast.. but none of the threads had pictures of what the pitting looked like.

Is this the pitting that means my axle is toast? (I'm assuming it is) I'd have guessed that it'd actually pit on the shaft where the bearing rides but I think I've already established that I'm an idiot by running it out of fluid.
