Default 6.0L Turbo build plan: Costs added up

Hey All,
I've spent hundreds of hours reading and learning from all the great minds on this board, and really appreciate all the wisdom and knowledge. I'm planning my first LS turbo build and thought I should give back a bit on what I've learned so far.

I picked up a 135K mile 6.0L junkyard LQ9 from a 2003 Silverado for $800. Plan is to replace the 350/700R4 in my 69 Camaro. Stock crank/stock 317 heads, 100% street car setup for suspension/handling. Looking for 600-700rwhp. No drag slicks. No hard launches.

With a little help from LS1NOVA (thanks!), here is my parts list so far (not including junkyard block). Hope this helps others!
(...of course any advice is welcome too).

Parts/prices sourced from variety of places.

yeah, most of that sounds about right. Fuel stuff adds up, but dont cheap out on that, its what makes a motor live a long life

Once you are sure you are done adding everything up.... Double it. Minimum.

Yeah, its amazing how quickly it adds up once you actually make a list. I'm sure there's a lot of stuff I'm forgetting too. Just thought this would add some perspective for others trying to plan a "budget" {wink}{wink} build.

A few things on there you can buy used for half the price.

You can really get rod bearings for $28.? good ones?

And a fuel pressure regulator for $30?

Also if you are building the engine, block work? balancing?

171-CB-663P Clevite Rod Bearnings $3.50ea from Texas Speed.

Yeah the cylinders are pretty clean, may need just a light hone. I'm halfway considering just cleaning up the stock pistons/rods and putting it back together. See how long it lasts.

...there has to be a cheaper way to do this.

Maybe...I'm not quite that far along yet though, need to get my longblock built first and see how much $$ is left. Haven't decided on single vs twin yet either. Opinions? 100% street car.

Sometimes you can save money using craigslist or going to a swap meet. I picked up a Leigenfelter intake with 90mm cable throttle body for 450 on CL. 4l80e as well for 350 with a fresh rebuild; wasn't certain the man was for real but bought the tranny anyways, tore into it and found all transgo gaskets and then sent it to tranny shop for shift kit to learn that the rebuild was really fresh.
Sometimes you can get lucky!

I'll say so far I've spent 9200 on engine (forged but factory crank), tranny fuel system and turbo and around 14000+ total....and still going. I expect the total for completion to be at least 20g's if not more.
My opinion for the single vs. twin is go twin! I've been considering getting another turbo and having a twin set up. My goal was to keep ac and with the manifolds flipped it wasn't happening, so single for me.

You should be able to pick up a set of siemens deka 80lbm injectors from one of the sponsors in the 360-380 range.

Don't quote me on this, but I am pretty sure you are going to need a controller for the 4L80 trans and there not cheap.

Ya these builds are expensive I am just about done with mine it took longer and about twice as much. Just stay on here and look for used parts all the time. Did you get the motor from a silverado from a ss? If not its a lq4. The 9 only came in escalades and the ss trucks. Not that its a big deal either way. That 69 Camaro is going to be insane!!! Good luck

No kidding lol. That was accurate with my garage build too.

It's easy to forget about the little stuff adding up. Just look at the price of fuel line fittings. It's easy to add many hundreds there. Block work, oh that's $500 more. Need good piston rings, that's another $300... never seems to end.

sorry but 10K for a engine swap is crazy...you paid 800 for a junkyard motor...run it...your new to turbos so why burn up a good built motor. you can save $2000 just buy running a cheaper turbo ($250 gt45 clone) and cxracing intercooler kit.

IAT sensor you can get from the junkyard for like 1 dollar too.

get a LS1 intake on here, ls1 tech, much cheaper than ebay, i got mine for 60 dollars with no throttle body, but the truck one bolts right up to it, then i bought ebay 5/8ths rails for like 100 shipped and did an aeromotive regulator and parker push lock fuel lines

that custom 226/230 is very close to a 225/225 cam that people nearly give away in classifieds, see if you can scrounge one up in there for like 130-200

Beautiful car!! I am building a 67 twin turbo now. Sounds like your power goals should be pretty easy! I wont have mine done for a while but I went with twins for a street car because I want less lag and more fun.

Thats not a bad idea. Good advice guys, keep it coming! Also, if it IS an LQ4, then compression ratio would be lower (the pistons do have a dish on them) and I could just run with it...

Also, my 700R4 is built, so I could probably get away with keeping that too for awhile.

Now we're talking! Thanks, I'll get in there and see what I can find.
