Went to the Air Force recruiter's office today. Have ?'s
So I met up with the recruiter today and she asked me all the general info and asked what type of jobs I would like to to. Well I was prepared and had a list of 10 jobs that I interested in and also told her that I have a AAS in Criminal Justice and she immediately said "then why not Security Forces". I respectful said no that's not what I want to do. Out of the list i gave her she said that most of the jobs fall under General but she didn't specific what jobs. I told her I did not want to go in as open as I DO NOT want to end up in Security Forces and she really didn't say anything to me. She gave me my paper work and set up a fallow up appointment for Sept 13.
My question is do I have to go in as open or do I have a choice? The way she explained it was I'll go to MEPS pick a category and after basic ill get to pick a job is that right? I have had many air force personal telling me to NOT go in as open.
Here is a list of the jobs I told her I was interested in. What are yall's thoughts/ info about these jobs? There in order from favorite to less favorite
Communication Signals Intelligence ***
Cyber Surety
Geospatial Intelligence
Network Intelligence
Pharmacy Specialist
Air Traffic Control
Diagnostic Imaging
Operation Intelligence
Tactical Aircarft Maintenance
Cryptologic Linguist
Aircraft LoadMaster
And any info I can get through this process will be greatly appreciated.

If you got good scores, you probably wont get screwed over. But it all depends on the needs of the Air Force. That being said, you can wait for a job slot to open up, but it might be a while. have you considered network security type jobs? Thats the hot ticket in and out of the Air Force.

In all honesty i would not pick any of the "intelligence" career fields. you kind of have a broad spectrum of fields you picked there from computers, to medical, aircraft etc. Just because they sound "cool" trust me, you may be surprised and bored. I am a 2T371 vehicle mechanic, and that is what i specifically wanted to do. I went in open Vehicle mechanic from meps, and half way through basic they have you pick your specific career field(if i remember correct, its been over 10 years)

I'm an MTI. Don't come here unless you have contract in hand stating what job you have, enlistment, stripes and or bonous. Trainee's get F'd all the time by coming here open general, open mechanical ect...
These are good choices IMO. If it was me I would choose Loadmaster especially if your single and you have no kids.
Cyber Surety
Pharmacy Specialist
Air Traffic Control
Cryptologic Linguist (They have airborne Linguist too)
Aircraft LoadMaster

After you take the ASVAB, hearing and vision tests at MEPs you'll find out what jobs you qualify for. Out of those you can pick your list of jobs that you want and the air force will pick one for you out of those. If there's one that you really want you can tell the recruiter and wait for it to open up if you qualify, it just depends on how much of a hurry you are to get into the operational air force. Either way you'll know before you even leave for basic. If you go "open" then your last week or so at basic they tell you what was picked for you..more than likely security forces but it can be pretty random.
I agree with the others on not going open general. I waited 6 months before going to basic and had a guaranteed job. Unless you want to learn how to plot to charts or constantly brief people via power point slides I wouldn't pick operations intelligence! Although with most of the intel career fields you'll probably be working in an office at a desk with no windows. I forgot to mention if you've been in trouble with the law or drugs it can effect you getting into intel as they will do a background check. If they catch you lying on your paper work they will kick you out, just dont lie and it's pretty easy. Loadmaster seems like a sweet deal but it really depends on what your into. They travel a lot as their job deals with being in charge of cargo that's loaded up on the aircraft and they have a pretty big re-enlistment bonus.

I agree with Pipelayaz, Loadmaster is a great job and you'll get to fly! Travel a lot and you might be able to get into a spec ops plane or a big jet and stay at the "nice" places. I have a buddy who is a pharmacy guy and he likes it also, it isn't bad and he has a good schedule. Linguist do also fly but be prepared to be in school for at least a year and hit the books hard!
The best advice I got before I joined was to not go in as "open" primarily because one of my buddys did that and he put in munitions and while it might not be bad he describes it as "building the fireworks for somebody else to play" and can't wait to cross-train. You can go in with the job YOU WANT, you might have to wait up to a year (I waited 10 months) but it will damn worth it when you hear all the stories in BMT of how people got screwed over by getting told that they would get what they wanted if they went in as open.

You go to a recruiter that answers your questions, but yet you have more questions. Why not go back or call the recruiter to get answers to those questions.

don't let the recruiter choose for you, you DO NOT have to go open anything, if you really know of a job that you want, wait for it. You have to put an open afsc in your list but you don't ha e to take it. I back down from going in the ARMY the weekend before shipping out for basic, then went in AF, btw if you have your degree see if you qualify to sign 4 years and get two stripes anyways. You don't look too sure of what you want in the AF yet, 59 months is a long time to wait for retraining. Just in case.

Coming in open is not that bad. It does have its perks though and most of the people who come in open, typically will leave after their first term or attempt to cross train. I came in open mechanical. I love my career field, but feel there is a better job out there. My wife came in open medical and she's in the same boat as myself. The good news about coming in open, is you will get in faster as opposed to waiting for a career field. As of now, the time you enter the DEP program until you actually leave for basic is roughly 6 months if you come in open. If you wait for a job it will definitely be 8-12 months of waiting. More perks about coming in open are you have no idea what you will be doing until your 3rd to 4th week of basic or whenever it is now. When I came in it was still 6 1/2 weeks for basic and we did it on the 3rd week of training. When you enter open, you have definite choices to select from. Electrical, Administrative, General, or Mechanical. If you do not want Security Forces or Services DO NOT GO SERVICES. You will have a much higher guarantee of not ending up in these career fields. However, if you fail your course(s) in tech school, there's an 85% chance you will end up in the Services career field depending on which career field you are selected for.
