Default Dave Connolly captures first win for new COPO Camaro with class win at Indy / US Nats

Dave Connolly, who formerly raced and won several Wallys in both sportsman and the tough Pro Stock class, got the job done in an all COPO Camaro final in the CC/SA class during eliminations today at the US Nationals. He is driving a white Camaro owned by Victor Cagnazzi and decked out with a "Grumpy's Toy" scheme similar to the grump's old '60s Camaros.

For those that haven't seen the car: www.dragracecentral.com/DRCPhoto.asp?ID=257574#indextop

A YouTube video of the car making a test hit before Indy:

There are four COPO Camaros qualified in the Stock eliminator field, the fastest being Todd Patterson. He qualified 12th at 9.53 on a 10.60 index.

There are two COPO Camaros qualified in the Super Stock eliminator field, the fastest being Marty Rinehart Jr in the ATI-backed car. He qualified 11th at 8.66 on a 9.70 index.

Connolly still hanging tough in stock; has a spot in round four with fifteen other drivers as the lone COPO remaining.

Thus the reason I said "class win" and it was posted on the Thursday of the original US Nationals weekend. He won the CC/SA class eliminator Wally.

A bit of an understandable letdown that he and Patterson agreed to race to 1000' and dump so they would not run too far under the index and get the AHFS penalty. Patterson red lit, but, they still ran to 1000' and dumped.

Yep, asking for a tear down and/or permanent index whack otherwise. Some comp eliminator drivers will also "drop" at a certain point versus running it out to save the index.
