Take it to a tuner and have him tune it.

That's what I get around town with 3.42s, converter, H/C/I
and a happy foot.

If it's stock then I'd suspect crusty old O2 sensors first off.
Maybe with '98 knock sensors pulling timing for an extra
"bonus".

The A4 cars are only rated at 17 city/25 highway to begin with. So if the numbers you have posted are city mileage, then you're right within the range you should expect. I usually only see about 16-17 in 100% city situations, and 19-20 with mixed driving, and 25-26 on the highway (A4, 2.73). I've owned two of these cars brand new, and that's the best they've ever done since day one.

There are a varity of factors that can affect MPG. 15 is low for mixed driving with a stock car (depending on your driving style), but 18 is within normal potential range.

I would also throw some new plugs and wires at it and a new fuel filter if you haven't done so recently.

I can gaurentee you after you do the o2's you will get way better gas mileage. I also suggest to change them all using OEM.

I hate to tell you but unless you do a lot of highway driving, 15-18 is about as good as you're gonna get. I average 19-21 with a half hour highway commute to work everyday.

I would not waste money changing the rear O2s if you're looking for better MPG. The rears have no effect on MPG, power, or anything other than monitoring cat efficiency.

If the OP is seeing codes for the front O2s though, then by all means he should take care of those.
