Default Turbo/Auto guys, come on in!

Just curious as to what transmission setups you guys are running. I am considering swapping my T56 out for an auto, im assuming i should go with a 4l80 to keep O/D. I want something that will stand up to 700-800 wheel. School me!

What size tires do you run and what RPM are you at at say 65-70 mph? I currently have 3.25's in my car.

T400, 3.36s, 28" tires = 70 mph(gps) @ 3000rpms.
Thats with a tight 10" converter.

Its very liveable but it is thirsty on the hwy. If you can pull off the 4l80, I would... Then you can gear it for the 1/4 but still cruise easy on the hwy.

If your on a budget go 400. The 80 is your best option for a really fast street car. expensive though. I run a flt level 7 4l65e with a trans break. 3800lbs car goes 10.1 @137 all day. But if I could do it all over again id go 80 because its stronger.

Money isn't overly tight. I would rather have the car the way I WANT it rather than make sacrifices that I will regret later. What do you 4L80 guys have into your swaps?

Keep the questions coming, its going to help me decise as well. Jakes transmission 80e seems to be the cheapest place if you have a pre 98 core. How much abuse can stock 80e handle?

I have less in my 4L80 swap than what I sold my T56 for. My trans is stock though with a HD2 shift kit. We will see how long it lasts.

I have a TH400 built with good clutches, new steels and HD sprag.stock VB with performance shift kit. Yank 3500 stall with 3.08 gears in my Foxbody

i bought the trans for 80 bux and spent $600 having it built...not bad for a trans that will hold 700 plus HP and a **** ton of tq

I too want to go auto in my cobra, its the same thing th400 or 4l80( i refuse to attempt a built 4r70w). I think 4l80 is the way to go for sure there really is no down side besides cost.

Is the 4L80 much bigger than a 4L60? Like width and depth?

Yes it is bigger. There are pics in the automatic section here.

Make sure that you buy it new from a vendor or get a stock one and put a shift kit in it.

Im running a 4L80E with a Transgo HD2 kit and Yank PY3600 with around 700rw and 3.42 rear gears with 26" tall tire. Below 3000rpm at 80mph. Its great. If I did it again Id use a Circle D triple disc converter though to use the lockup at full throttle. Check out Jakes Performance for some bad *** 80E's with transbrakes.
