take the connector from the 02 wheel cut it off, then cut off the connector on the 99 wheel and wire in the connector from the 02 onto the 99wheel, why did you swap wheels anyway, dont want the radio controls??

Default steering wheel

Have you done this or just making an guesstimated guess that that should work? I have an aftermarket radio and the buttons are useless to me and its bulkier than the 98-00 wheel.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Just a bit off topic here, but I recently purchased a new aftermarket steering wheel from Lecarra. I have not received it yet but it should be coming in soon. Anyway, What steering wheel puller are you using. The helms manuals say you should use the specified puller but who's got them? I was going to try autozone's puller. What do you guys think?

No need to cut the harness, just remove the pins out of your factory connector and remove them out of the 99 connector then take the 99 connector casing and push your factory pins into it. In other words all you're doing is swapping out the connector casings. I did this on my 98 as I installed a 2000 wheel in my car and used the 2000 air bag harness.

Forget what I said above as the more I think about it since you're doing the opposite of what I did the only thing you need to do is swap the steering wheel. Under the air bag is the same in all years, you'd just have a extra connector that you wouldn't use (radio controls). You don't even need to pull the column, just the wheel. You may have to cut off the connector that is for the radio controls where it comes out of the steering coulmn under the steering wheel. Here's a picture of the harness - Steering Wheel Harness *Cut and Paste Link - Webshots*

You wont be able to use a 02 air bag with the 99 wheel. The air bags are totally different. I know this because i swapped my 99 wheel for a 02 wheel.

If you need a 99 air bag and the connector, I have one sitting in my garage that I can sell you. Let me know.

I think what he's saying or how I took it is that he wants to retain a working air bag, he wants the 99 air bag to work if he puts the 99 wheel. I'm pretty sure that the connector that attaches to the air bag is the same for all years, just the other end that connects under the dash is different, so what I was saying is that all he'd have to do is replace the steering wheel/air bag instead of going through all the trouble of pulling the column. I could be wrong on that as it has been over a year since I did the swap on my car.

I could have sworn a company makes an adapater for about $100 that will allow you to interface the streering wheel controls with aftermarket decks

I installed the adaptor. It takes the steering wheel command translates it to IR signal and shoots it out of an IR diode pointed at the receiving remote eye in the aftermarket deck. I installed the eye in my console by the shift indicator (Auto trans) so that when I drive with my hand on the shifter the diode still has a clear path to the deck. It was pretty easy but you will have to drill a small hole. Much easier than what you are about to try and spend.
