question about rockers
Ill be assembling my shortblock up this monday installing heads and valve train and just wanted to know how do you figure out if cylinder 1 is on the compression stroke so i knkw what valves to tighten at that specific time so i know if im on Cam BC. I was going to initially just turn the crank over while my heads are off and install them with while #1 was on TDC and mark the harmonic Balancer with a marker at the 12'o clock position. Also two other unrelated questions. Should i use copper spray on my MLS gaskets? and should RTV be used on the rocker bolts?

I believe you may have meant 'Loctite' on the rocker bolts.
Also, from "Joseph"...an engine builder & tech guru, here on LS1Tech...
I'm glad you found my info helpful, not many people know the valve events for all 8 cylinders and when they happen. You would naturally assume with the dots aligned it would be the firing position of cylinder #1, when its actually the start of the intake stroke as far as the piston/intake valve is concerned. With the dots aligned cylinder #6 is the one to set preload/lash/ or for installing rockers.
Each 90* (720* / 8cyl = 90*) on the crankshaft gear is another cylinder firing, while each 45* (360* / 8cyl = 45*) on the camshaft gear is another cylinder firing. Having the timing cover off helps to watch the sequence.
