Default oil pressure at 80 psi, wtf?

this prolly isnt the right place for this, but my factory gauge (99 Z28) is almost pegged, stops before 80 lbs. at idle its nearly 50-60 psi. now i know this MUST be a guage problem with the crappy factory gauges but what SHOULD my oil pressure be on a stock LS1. I have an aftermarket autometer sport comp 2 1/16 gauge but its a mechanical one and i got really no idea how to keep the factory gauge as well. I just need to know if the motor has issues or the factory gauge is just waaaay off. i use 5w30 Pennzoil synthetic, fram tough gaurd filter, and the motor has 111k on it. once the car warms up it comes down a tad but after 2300 or so rpm the gauge will chill out at around 70 lbs oil pressure...factory gauge of course.

**** I have no problem with 80 psi. Kurt Urban has a fitting so that you can grab a gauge port while keeping the oem sender.

car runs aiight, im just thinking that, therotically if i put say....dino str8 50 wieght in there instead of the 5w30 synthetic, would my oil pressure hit 120 psi? lol i know the stock gauge is crap and id like to use the after market but could it be off that much? I just want to try straight 50 weight to see if my gauge pegs.

Have you replaced the sending unit yet?

my 02 trans does the same thing i replaced the sending unit and no change, if you are worried , you can get an adapter off the internet that screws in place of your oil filter and put a gauge on it . I did and my psi was fine . Some of these car do this, there are places were you can send your instrument cluster off and get it repaired or buy a new one.

i figured there was a way to adapt an aftermarket gauge to the car and i knew that my stock gauge is wrong too. im still kinda unsure what the oil pressures are supposed to be for my stock internal LS1. i remember my LT1 trans am was rated at only 8 psi of oil pressure at idle (!). anyone have a link to where i can get this adapter to use a aftermarket oil pressure gauge? I might just keep everything they way it is now if all you guys are saying that the stock sending unit is the culprit and probably needs to be replaced.
i think someone said its on the back of the block, rear intake manifold on the lifter tray????
