TH400 or 4l80E for High HP Boost.. and gears
Yes yes i know its not in trans section but Im curious what you boost guys think, I wanted the RPM 4l80e since its a 90% street car and OD would be great but money is getting tight and i could really use the $4000 else where and not in just a trans. For a 800-900HP boost car do you guys think the TH400 will be OK for a street car with lets say a 3.08 gear? I wanted the car to be a highway monster. Fox Body....

Im planning on doing the same thing eventually.
Extra gear with the ability of locking up the converter is why I want one.
Jakes Performance has a fully manual one that Im looking at.

bout to grab my jakes level 5. comes with a custom trans brake. basically built for 1500rwhp. overdrive and the gas mileage. long trips. itll come in handy. there are a few other reasons i looked into this and decided i dont want the th400. its basically the same trans, and does not weigh that much less. id find the link for it but eh.

I have one of each in my two turbo cars. The 400 is on a 4th gen with 2.75 gears. I love everything about it except the non lockup converter. It's a low 9 sec car but drives nice. But the cruise control surges and rpm's climb when going up a grade etc.
The 4l80 is in a rat rod. It is tunable & I have it that once it locks up in OD it will pull any hill without unlocking or shifting. F'n love it, turbo just pulls that bitch right along at very low rpms. It has 3.00 gears.

Seems like a split room, not making this easy for me fellas .. But keep it coming, I had a TH400 in my old notch with nitrous. Guess I had a bad converter it just felt like poo on highway. But that was with very little power compared to my new build.

haven't ran mine yet but bought low mileage 03 4l80e (came with lq4 pullout) Jake's brake and manual controller $550, $75 used early od planetary, paid my trans guy $300 to put it all in, do the internal mods Jake recommended and put new frictions in. Plan to run trans with Holley Dominator but bought manual controller in case learning curve on trans tuning was steep

I have a $200 craigslist special 4L80 in mine with a HD-2 and 2.73's in the rear. So far the trans has been working great. I was always used to a 6 speed car so it's nice cruising along at 70 at 1800 RPM's. I wanted the most DD friendly trans as I like to drive my cars.

I got 25 mpg on the hot rod power tour on the highway. Drove it thousands & thousands of miles just to get to the start of HRPT.

I am around 2100 at a little over 70 mph with my 2.75 & 28" tire if all is right. The 3k stall will let it go up if I am going up hill & like i said surges pretty bad when on cruise control unless it is totally flat road.
