Default How do I check oil pressure without starting the motor,

I'm getting near to starting the motor for the first time.
I just want to make sure the oil pump is doing it's job.

What kind of gauge are you using? I'm using a mechanical gauge so I hooked it up and hooked up my starter. I then cranked the motor over until I got oil pressure. If you are using an electrical you can do the same thing, but you'll have to get voltage to your gauge.

The GM instructions for their crate motors says to pull all the spark plugs and crank it over 10 seconds at a time until pressure is observed. I had the stock oil pressure gauge hooked up to the top back of the motor.

If you don't have a gauge you can measure the resistance of the stock sensor. this guide has a table.

post #2 for a quick test......and also the full test with filter on>>Pull your fuel pump fuse(s), crank a few times for 8-10 seconds.
It is quite possible that all of the oiling system components are working fine, but pressure isn't achieved right 'off of the bat'.

I took a galley plug out on the drivers side, low, and made a primer from an article I read in a magazine. Basically you put a small block oil pump in a 2 gallon bucket with fresh oil and then spin the pump to presurize the system. It worked, is cheap, and there was oil throughout the engine. My mechanical oil pressure gauge is hooked to the rear of the engine behind the intake. Oil pressure a soon as it started.
