Default 450+ hp LQ4 Build on a budget

I know this has been covered before and I know this is probably getting old. But I'm new to the engine building world. I've never built any type from SBC to LS. I'm learning so before anyone says it I have used search and have read countless thread to the point my head now hurts.

My goals are simple. I plan to stab this into my 68' Chevelle. I would like 450hp and TQ at the wheel if possible but I want it to be very street-able. I don't plan to take it to the track at any point. I'm not looking for light to light racing. I just want power when I want it. I don't want something that I wouldn't feel comfortable with my younger brother driving.

What I have is 02' 6.0 LQ4 with 317 stock heads and truck intake.

So my question to you guys is what Head, cam and intake combo do you guys suggest? Also I do not have a tranny as of yet but plan to get a 4L80e. From what I've read and have been told the 4L60e or 4L65e eventually are destroyed by the 6.0 block. I don't know if this is true not so I'm hoping you guys could also enlighten me on that as well.

for a strong daily driver, the 6.0 will do great with a 228-232 cam, tbss or nnbs truck intake and tb, long tubes, underdrive pulley, mill the 317s .030 to bump compression up to work with cam, 3600 stall and at least 3.73s. 6.0s kill trannys so either 6 spd or 4l80 is your best bet. feel free to pm with any ?s you may have....good luck with your project, rob

Is this something that I will need to upgrade later or could this be a solid seth for the long haul? I would really like a setup that I wont need to change in the future.

Is there a specific year or the 4l80 I should be looking for?

I'll be nicer than most that will notice this. To get to 450whp from a 300 crank hp motor will take a lot more than this. Not a sarcastic or mean tone here at all. Just fact. We all learn this the hard way. A cam and heads are your quickest paths. Just know that new injectors to make that power will be at least $450 - Tune - $500+ Headers and Exhaust is at least $600 in the cheapest route. Gasket sets and all pieces needed to put it all back together with new gaskets, compatible valvetrain and the like adds up quick. You're already close to $2K to purchase needed supporting mods before you even buy the performance parts.

That said, Don't let any of that stop you and always persist. Good luck in your endeavors.

Are you going to go with a carb or do you plan on fuel injection?

It will be tough to do on that kind of budget. The main recipe to picking up an LQ4 on a budget in my opinion is to try and get some 243 heads, a mid ranged sized cam, and full exhaust. The 243 heads will give a notable bump in compression which these motors need badly. I am not sure that 450 at the tire is attainable, but 400rwhp+ seems very doable to me.

WEll we know what kinda motor you got, what supporting mod's such as headers, etc do you have? The supporting crap is what eat's up the budget more so, than the cam etc... if your lookin for 450whp through a auto your gonna need a snotty cam, quite a bit of compression, and a really good converter.. I.e your budget is blown...

So it sounds like my goal and budget together are not realistic. Since I really can not change my budget what is a realistic goal I can reach?

are you opposed to nitrous? if you just want the power here and there that's going to be your best bet with the budget you listed.

On a $2500 budget? is that including trying to get a trans? If so then your goals are far stretched unless you find some amazing deals. If you have 2500 to spend on the motor then longtubes, mill the stock heads, get a nice cam kit(with springs/rods) plus a tune could be done for that much.

Assuming you have the complete motor, computer and wiring harness you can probably find some 243 heads, have them freshened up with a valve job and set up with the correct springs for the cam you want to use. You should be able to get it all together for $2500 or less easy and make well over 400 at the wheels. The problem is going to be getting your swap parts like headers, motor mounts, transmission adapter and things like that in your total budget.

Here's a CarCraft article where they took an LQ4 plus $2,600 to get 480 hp (~400 wheel). That included a Carb, intake, and spark control ($1000) you won't have to spend. But you've still got to get the PCM & wire harness

just buy a good stall.

that alone can drop your 1/4 mile by up to a half second with traction or more in some cases.

Plus you wont ever be able to cam it without the stall
