Default Wow! Maybe you can explain this to me?

To our surprise Edgewater Race Park was open today for test and tune so we got one more chance to go fast. Last week me, my wife and my Dad all took turns running the car at Tri-state while our tuner, Tracey Scott with Cincy Speed, made adjustments. The da was a little over 1,500 that day and around 150 today. Last week's best time was posted by Dad at 11.63 @ 117.8 mph. Today...much faster.
I started it off with 11.35 at 120 and backed it up with an 11.358 at 120.26 mph. Then the wife took a few cracks at it (6 lol) and finished her turns off with back-to-back 11.31's! Of course I wanted to lay a better time for the sake of my pride. Problem was, she got pulled off the track after her last pass and given the 'what for' regarding running faster than 11.5 without a roll bar. She begged them to let us continue to run under the condition that we button the cut-outs back up and re-install the cold-air induction tube onto the throttle body. They said ok as long as she assured them that under no circumstances she would go faster than 11.5. (Must be nice to be Beautiful)
So we buttoned it all up and returned to street action form. I hopped in and did a good burn out and knocked down a 11.22 @ 121 mph, setting a new best for the car for every measurement. 1.55 60ft. time, 7.15 1/8th mile and over 96mph in the 8th.
Wow! Does that make sense to anyone? I mean the faster with exhaust closed up part, not that my wife was beating me most of the day part. lol

1500+ last week, 150+ today. I'm not talking about the overall improvement. I'm talking about setting the best time by a tenth, on the last pass of the day, while da was higher than the earlier passes and the ONLY pass the cut-outs were closed up and cold air intake tube was in place.

We always uncap the cut-outs! Apparently it's costing us time. Just don't understand it.

How close are the cutouts to the o2 sensors?

That should be far enough away. do you usually run that cai? Maf or no Maf. Filter? Just straight throttle body?

On the street, it has a cai hooked up and cut-outs closed. Has a maf but only used to measure intake charge temperature. Car has a Density tune. Filter for street driving but at the track we were disconecting the cai tube from both the throttle body and maf, leaving the electronics plugged in on the maf so the computer could still read the air temp.
I'm guessing torque under the curve was improved by closing the cut-outs?

Possibly. Ik my car responds better with a filter. I did runs back to back and ran worse without it. Next time your at the track do one or the other and see how it runs.

Nice runs! Was the car tuned with the cut outs closed?
Are there any other days edgewater will be open this year?

Usually with a cutout closed, you gain torque and if the exhaust isn't restrictive, you might not gain any additional hp. That could equate for some of the gain. Plus the air filter might be helping since you have a MAF in the car.

But it was tuned with the cutout open and filter off? I know the tune can change based on changes like that.

Interesting either way.

my guess, more tq with cuts outs closed and cooler air from the intake pipe.

Nice car, I think you are getting stronger bottom end coming up through the rpms with the cutouts closed. Betcha you put it on a dyno you will see the differeance in the bottom and middle. Equals a better time overall.

Maybe you need to do a little wizardly move like variable opening cutouts. Closed at low rpm's and open up top.

CAI connected is better intake air colder and smoother.

A low overlap cam is not terribly sensitive to exhaust within reason, open exhaust gets to be a bigger deal with aggressive high overlap cams.

It would have been interesting to say run CAI installed and cutout open and vic versa so you would have known what made the difference.

If the cutout being open slows the car then it is likely lean with the exhaust open and proper AFR with it closed.

Great job man....car runs strong !!! Perhaps the engine had time to cool down
while you were working on it.

Car runs consistent in track form regardless of cool down. Short cool down prior to new record. Much longer cool downs on some of the earlier passes. Car was hot-lapped several times too with no difference.
Dyno showed +24 hp and 11 tq with things unbuttoned. No real losses under the curve. Gains were after 5,200.

Here are some pics of Jen putting the hurt on a couple of seasoned racers. She didn't lose a match up all day even against the green Trans am that tree'd her here in the pic. She left the line sideways, at one point he had almost 2 cars on her. She never came off the floorboard and came back to inch him out at the line on the big end. That's my girl! I'm glad I didn't have to race her. I'm not 100 % positive but it sure looks to me like in at least 2 of the pictures that she pulled a wheel off the track. 1 picture was taken just before she got to the 60 ft line and it's barely on the ground even there.
