Default Best budget rear end ??

whats the best build for a rear end for a 00 ss camaro ? is it a 9 inch ? 8.5 10 bolt?? or the dana rear end ? i dont want to spend over 1000 dollars i want to have it hold at least 600 hp leaving on bottle launching 3000 without doing what my 10 bolt has done 3 times already!

who builds 8.5 corporates to fit these cars ? I see 8.5 on your list....

they are pretty tough would be a good option for those that want considerably stronger than stock but dont plan on making enough power to need a 9"/12 bolt/s60

for a grand I think you would need to be equipped to build it yourself , but its a good question cant wait to see where your thread goes

Dana 60, 9 or 12 bolt. If you plan on drag racing dont waste money on modding your 10 bolt

Agreed^ just dont go and invest money on your 10 bolt! You can NEVER go wrong with a 9" rear end, 9" rear ends will hold serious power and if you ever plan on going with a high HP application build you know that 9" will be there for you if you dont mind how much are you willing to pay for a rear end? 12 bolts are a bit less cheap in price, they are also good rear ends that can hold good amount of high HP

he is not mentioning modding his 10 bolt unless he got the size wrong ? 3rd & 4th gen got 7.5" 10 bolts thats what is in ls1 f bodies stock

Early 10 bolts from 72 I think it was and before (60's) were 8.2 but around 73 they went to the 8.5 coporate in both bolt in axle or c clip style axle , these 8.5 10 bolts are actually really strong , damn close to a 12 bolt and way more common(easy to find cheap) many 9 & 10 second grand nationals are still running on their 8.5 coporate rears , gn's got them g body 442's/hurst olds any z28 or trans am from the mid 70's to 81 etc.... these would all be posi applications too many with decent gears such as 342 & 373.

I have a 73 ventura that has one and that was behind a straight six and glide so they put non posi 8.5 corporates in lots of stuff , I also have a 81 trans am that has one in it...

You're likely going to need to be able to learn some fabrication skills or become good friends with a fabricator. With that budget I'd be looking for a donor 8.8 out of a ranger or explorer or newer mustang with 31 spline trak loc then make it work.

You can't get an aftermarket rear housing for $1000 even if its empty. Better up your budget there fella.

You are looking at at least 2 grand to hit your needs and that is if you find one that is used off this Forum!!! If you want to keep it very street friendly stay with a Posi.

Should just invest in a 9" and not have to worry about it again ever

im leaning towards just saving the 2300$ and buying a full rear but ive seen people who end up making a bullet proof rear end for 500$ including buying it and building it also selling their 10 bolt to cover cost

Yes, this is a direct fit. It is the Moser housing and axle package, you would need to get a center section for it. You could get a used center section (third member) from a junkyard. If you went this way I would look for one from a Ford pick up that has a limited slip in it.
