Anyone with Howards 230/232 camshaft?
Hello,
I'm looking for people who tried howards 230/232 0.625 camshaft. Howards state this cam has an excellent mid range tq/hp with a good high end. This is what I'm looking for. The reason I chose howards because I had bad experiences with compcams quality (many soft metal issues).
Thanks

Howards has a fair amount of "made in USA" stuff and are rather local to me. I don't really hear a lot about them, which of course means I don't hear anything bad about them despite the fact they are only 30minutes away.
The made in USA cranks they come right out and say are Callies. So they use some quite good suppliers for the "house brand" products.
For you airplane buffs Competition Products/Howards Cams is located up against EAA Airventure grounds.

I have used a number of Howards solid rollers in sbc and bbc over the last few years, I have not had any issues with them. That is until this last spring when I wanted to go a little smaller on one in a BBC (nothing else was changed), after installing the new cam I could only get 5 to 8 passes before the distributor gears would wear away. This is an engine I have owned for 25 years and know well, the last Howards cam was in it for 5 years. I understand that things can happen, and was understanding even though this issue pretty much sidelined that project last season. Now the part that is troubling. When I contacted Howards, I could tell right away they were not going to help me out other than with a lot of double talk.
It is important to have and sell a good product, but many times you only really find out how good a product or company is, is when something goes wrong.

Back in the day Crane was one of the only manufacturer of cam cores and
all the other companies used them for there own grinds. I'm also fairly local
(about 1hr 15 min) from Competition Products/Howards but I seldom use their
cams unless for a tight budget build. I understand they have a quality cam
grinder but their lobe profiles are not what I would call cutting edge.
Lunati would be my choice if I was anti-Comp Cams. Most people don't know
but Harold Brookshire (founder of Ultradyne) went to work for Lunati for a few
years before being wisked away by the Toyota racing program as they began
to enter the Nascar/Nationwide series. I use a bunch of his cam profiles that
remain in their catalogue for street and circle track engines. Their Vodoo line
of cams were designed by him as well.

I haven't dabbled with the LS yet but I am very happy with them for my LT1 stuff.
A while back I saw some funkyness with the coolant level on my 5.3l truck and I was honestly hoping it was a Castec issue so I would have an excuse to do heads on it. The level settled though and the coolant passed a combustion gas test so I lost my excuse to play with the engine in there for now.
I did pickup a LQ9 shortblock for $400 I would like to put in there eventually, hence the time I spend in this section.
The 5.3l is just a little lazy in a crewcab Z71 when my other vehicle is as quick as it is.

My cam specs are in my sig. I liike my cam alot and had the same goal as you, good low-mid range power and makes power up high also. I shift at about 6,700. I know it is a comp cam but i havent had any issue with it.
