Default Wastegate dump into exhaust or air

Aside from the sound, are there any advantages or disadvantages to dumping into the atmosphere vs back into the exhaust? Seems like back into the exhaust is restrictive but to what? Would be much easier for me to dump into the atmosphere.

Well it all depends on how much air you plan on moving and what size your downpipe is. I know for a fact a 3" downpipe with the watesgate dumped back into it will support at least 700 rwhp. But that is not ideal and power would increase with a bigger dp. What size downpipe and what kind of power? Besides the sound, there would be no disadvantage to dumping it to the atmosphere

Open atmosphere dump is obnoxious.

I had it like that for a year, then routed it into the DP

3 inch down pipe and around 800HP. Thinking about running them down and slash cutting the pipe.

No doubt, the bigger the better.

How loud is a dump really? Wouldn't it only be dumping while at full boost? At that point idk if it would be louder than the exhaust right?

On the kits that i have built i always dumped the wastegate below the car. It will only makes any extra noise while at full boost.

Strangely it seems that in some circumstances boost control can be better with the WG routed back into the exhaust. May have something to do with the Bernoulli effect, or god knows what...
