Default new guy first gen III 5.3 into 70 camaro

this is my first attempt on a gen III, its going into my 70 Camaro. I only want to mod the valvetrain and heads for now. Bottom end will get a rebuild for now. I want 350-400hp and am really inerested in running it on e85. the engine is coming out of a 99 chevy 1500. Any suggestions on cam maufacturer? head milling/porting?

You could send your 5.3L heads to Advanced Induction or Total Engine Airflow to get "top of the line" CNC work and an upgraded valvetrain. The heads will flow very well, approx. 300cfm @.600 lift. Get the Comp Cams rocker arm trunion upgrade if you are using the stock rocker arms. Adding a '01-'04 LS1 intake manifold (aka. LS6 intake) will allow a 400-500hp heads/cam motor to breathe well. Cam selection depends on what you want, there are tons of good LS cams out there. Btw, a custom cam will cost you roughly the same as an off-the-self cam. If you will be using mass air, use an LS2/LS6 85mm MAF sensor over the LS1 75mm MAF, there are millions out there and are very inexpensive. With proper fuel and good exhaust the engine will well exceed 400 crank hp, even will a mild cam.

For an example. The the setup in my C5 is quite simple, very reliable, inexpensive in my opinion and makes ~510 crank hp. It's a stock 5.7 LS1 shortblock, PRC stage 2.5 5.3L cnc'd heads, Bullet Racing custom cam (227/230 duration, .625/.600 lift, 111.5 LSA), LS6 intake manifold, stock LS1 75mm TB, LS2 85mm MAF, Blackwing air intake, 42lb injectors, 1 3/4" LT headers, 3" offroad x-pipe, Z06 Ti axleback exhaust and dyno tuned. Makes 432whp & 408wtq.

The heads I have cost $1,310 assembled from Texas Speed & Performance, that includes new heads. But I swapped out the PRC dual valve springs that came with the heads with BTR platinum dual springs because the PRC springs started to break after a few thousand miles. But I would send the heads you already have to TEA to get worked over if I were you, instand of buying the heads I have. Probably save a few bucks too.
