Default How to make 550-600 rwhp from LS1

I'm new to the forum and ls world. I recently bought a 69 camaro that I am building a pro touring car out of. The car came with a rebuilt LS1 from a 99 Z28. It has a stock bottom end with 243 heads, torquer V2 cam, and LS6 intake. I have a complete chassis works suspension with a fab9 true trac rear end and a 4L80E trans for the car.

Question is: What is the best way to get the power I'm looking with my current setup? Goal is 550-600 rwhp.

1. Do I buy a turbo and a 383 stroker kit?
2. Can I buy a stroked LS3 short block and use my current top end?
3. Do I sell the whole motor and start from scratch?

Ideally I would like a 427 or at a minimum a 383. I want this to be a streetable car without using NOS.

Any help or suggestons would be appreciated.

You're going to need some serious cubes and top end to pull that kind of power naturally aspirated.

Your best bet is a basic forged 347 with a turbo. It will be tough to get to your goals with anything under a 418, and if you do get there it will be a very non-streetable setup.

A budget friendly setup would be an iron 6.0L with a turbo. Can easily make 550rwhp. Many have done this successfully.

Throw a procharger on it.

I'm hoping to be close to the 600 rear wheel with the addition of the 102 intake, better exhaust and a vacum pump with a mafless tune. The headers might hold it back.

Thanks for the replies. So if I was to go FI with a stroker kit, what turbo setup would be best? Procharger?

Is there a good site sponsor to discuss this with?

Most sponsors would be able to point in the right direction. AES was building a short block designed for boost and I'm sure others must also. Check out the forced induction section if that is the way you want to go.

There is a guy in indy with a stock bottom end ls1 and an f1 procharger making 624 hp on 8 pounds of boost. But I would highly suggest getting a forged bottom end if you plan on making any reliable power

I would think that if you wanted to use your heads and intake then forced induction is the only way to go. Going to a NA 427 would require pretty much everything new except for the front cover and oil pan.
But, for some NA is the only choice.

A decently cubed forged motor on spray would work as well.

A procharger on top of the mods you have should give you your HP goal.

Turbo/supercharger/nitrous... With a stock bottom end LS1 should get you there... However if you have the extra money to build up the short block it wouldn't be a bad idea to do that though.

I have a cam/head/nitrous setup (only a 100 shot) on my Z06 and it makes 540rwhp/590rwtq on spray. You won't get 550rwhp NA on stock cubes though.

Since you already have a decent LS1 combo and don't want to spray, big
cube NA will also be BIG coin, I'd consider a budget turbo set-up...The Borg-
Warner S475 is only $6-$700 range and can be had with a .96 ar for quicker
spooling. You could put in some 80lb injectors and safely run 10lbs of boost
on E85 fuel....easily eclipsing your 550 mark....closer to the 600 rwhp. No
fancy headers...just 6.0 manifolds backwards and E-bay tubing to save a few
bucks.....

Your setup, supercharged with 5 or 6 lbs of boost should get you there and if tuned properly should be dependable. If it lets loose one day, then build or buy a forged bottom end in bigger cubes if you prefer and throw serious boost at it.

Turbo, Procharger or a lot of spray.. It takes a lot of money and a well designed plan to get 500rw out of a h/c LS1.

Otherwise, see the bible:

You say you ideally want 383 cubes and no N2O. This is very simply answered to get at least 600whp. A nice forged 383 stroker assembly for your current LS1 with reverse dome pistons to add some cc's to lower the compression suitable for boost. Then add whatever turbo or supercharger setup that suits your liking. This will very easily give you 600whp without a sweat and be very streetable and reliable for long time.

^ 390's actually handle boost like a champ. Different pistons. Thicker ring lands.

I'm with everyone else. You'll need a power adder to get there. Do H/C/I and throw a 100 shot on it. Else you'll need to go FI or find yourself the worlds happiest dyno.
