Default Oil for fi

I just got a super charged 02 z06. It has a ls2 in it and it is fully built 402. My question is, will mobil 1 5w-30 still be the best oil for this engine? Thanks

That's actually the worst oil. EPA regs have forced them to remove a lot of the anti wear additives.

Your best bet is valvoline VR1, any redline street oil, brad penn, joe Gibbs or amsoil.

I created an important oil info thread not too long ago.

Listen to this guy.

Also, Mobil one 5w30 sucks! It used to be good stuff years back.

I've always used Amsoil Series 2000 20w50. It's a bit pricey, but i've always had great results with their oils & grease.

I also like Rotella T6 5w-40. It's relatively cheap, but still has a good amount of zinc. I've been using it in my turbo truck and also started using it in my stock 2010 LS3 camaro. In fact, about 3 weeks ago o'reilly's had a sale on it, $20/gallon!

I use the vr1 20w-50 but with the winter months and me wanting to tune it soon should I run a lighter weight oil like a 10w-40 and then put back in vr1 come spring? Just curious what you guys do when having it tuned during the winter. I want to break in my converter a little before hitting the rollers so it's going to be cold out.

I wouldn't use 20w/50 in engines where it's cold weather. Oil gets thick, too thick up here. I suggest the VR1 40 weight in all my motors and switch to Mobile 1 0w/40 which still has zinc in it.

Synthetic is what I use in all my LS motors. Well I felt like this was a dumb question but seeing as this is my first fi I thought it would be better to ask a noob question. I'm glad I did thanks

Does the full synthetic have the same ZDDP level as the non?

I remember seeing a ZDDP additive you can buy. It was the size of a bottle of friction modifier for a diff.

You could always add that to your mobil 1

no emissions by me. I have been running the conventional VR1 20-50 for about 5k with no issues. This is after taking out a crank bearing with Mobil 1.

thinking about switching to the synthetic version only because our summer months get hot!

I second Rotella T6. The stuff is awesome. Sent a sample in after 5000 miles of driving like a hoon, and the oil tested great.

That's what I like to hear! I never go much more than 1500-2000 miles on it bc it's so cheap, it's no big deal to change it often. But that's good to hear that after 5,000 miles it still is in good shape!

I just had time to sit down and read that link from Louis. I'm glad I ask this. I would have used Mobil 1. Not now
