Okay. I been helping a friend with his fox lsx swap and for helping him out he gave me a th400. Now the thing is he has no idea about it, what it came out of, what year it is, basically just knows its a th400. I got it with the tranny and a basket of parts. Where do I even begin to start researching what I have? I work with a guy who used to do transmissions for a living and he said he would go through the box and everything to get me a run down of what is missing and what I have and need to buy.

So are there numbers somewhere on the tranny that I could search to get more info on the tranny?

one big identifier is the tailshaft. if it is very short and has a yoke that bolts to the tailshaft, it is a truck/van tranny. the car ones used a standard style slip yoke

There should be a 1" square tag on the sid of the trans held on by a rivet that will contain the info you need.
You will have to decode it.

Its not put together. Its just the case and then all parts are in a basket

I found the tag.

Numbers are 86 FMA 62461

I put them in google and came up with nothing. Anywhere else I could look?

You should be able to identify the tail shaft. It will either be on that is 3" long or one that is I think 9" long. After that, there is not much else you need to figure out about it.

86 is the year, so 1986.
FM means 350 V8 in a C30 series pickup.

Yea I too am confused about the A.. The number on the tailshaft is 8624486 LESTER-8 which from what I am researching is a short tail

Short tail is 4.25" long. The long ones were uncommon.
Trucks typically used a bolt on rear yoke because they had a 2 piece driveshaft. There is a difference in the trans output shaft, but can still be used for a car application.
