Default trying to decide on 4l60e tran for my 69 ls swap

I am in the process of buying parts for my 69 camaro ls1 swap.
The c5 trans i have will not work so I am trying to decide on what or where to buy a replacement.
I found one local salvage yard for $750 from a 01 camaro but it has 90k on it and I have to take their word its good.
I would like to buy new but I found they are a bit pricy and do not know if they include eveything I need.
I have a budget and still need all the other parts to bolt it in and make it work so I am trying to keep the trans price under $1,200.00
any sugestions..

Your cheapest and best bet is to buy a truck transmission. If you can find one with fairly low miles from a 5.3 your more likely to find a transmission that is good and hasnt been abused as bad as the fbody transmission.

$750 seem high for a used 90k Trans.. suggest you hit Craigslist and some of the Forum for sale sections..

Is John close to you? If not, the warranty is next to useless, IMO.

Hope his building skills are better than his grammar.

Its not a bad price but it is a e bay dealer. if its dynoed with paperwork it shoul be ok ..correct?
My wfe say go with the 9k junkyard trans because its local. but if its bad I do not what to pull it at the point I will be at in this build.
What other trans should I be looking at ? any way to convert the low milage c5 trans over to rwd? i belive the shafts are a different size but could they be changed and I can buy a tail housing and bellhousing?

I got a core from the salvage yard 200 bucks used it for mock up and then had it gone thru by a friend at a local trans shop for 700. Worked out really well. Didn't have to worry about taking it back out.

Same here. Find you a local transmission shop with a good reputation, buy the $200 trans and have it rebuilt. Ask the car guys in your area, they'll know who's good and who isn't, and you should be able to have a trans that's gone through and good to go for right around a grand if not under.

I bought one for $200.00 its from a 98 ws6 trans am with 84k miles on it and I trust it better than the $750.00 salvage yard trans.
I got to talk to the cars owner, it was not beat and he was swaping it to a 6 speed. good deal.
Still might freshen it up.

chevynut55,
great buy. I'd try it after cleaning it up a big. Either get car running to ensure its good, then replace tail seal and fluid/filter. Rebuild it once it takes a crap. JMO

Thats what i plan on doing becase money is getting tighter on this project.
its is a good trans and I think I will install a shift kit because I alredy have a aftermarket pan to install.
I wonder if I should use any of the parts from the c5 trans or is it a wast of time?
Now I get to figure out how to hook up a speed omeder nd if the motor harness controlls the trans or if I need to buy a seperate trans harness/controller.

You can also look for a 4l80. Requires a different crossmember and some fittings for the trans cooler lines, but they're good for about 450hp stock and were used in trucks, so they don't get the abuse that the 4l60's in the Camaros get. I'm putting one in my '69 tomorrow behind a 6.0 liter.
