Default Cam interchange question

I am about to start on a new heart for my '03 Silverado. She has a 4.8 now, going to do a budget build up on a 5.3 for more power. Question is: I have a stock LS2 cam out of my '05 GTO, can I use that in the 5.3 or is there differences that make it not work? Thanks in advance!

Stock LS2 cam has no reluctor pattern at the rear. The earlier Gen3 engines needed the reluctor for the Camshaft Position Sensor in the valley to read from.
Sure you could still run it with no CMP signal but it would crank over longer before firing & fart/backfire at random times. You might also lose tach signal.

Alternatively you could fit the 05 LS2 camgear to the front of the LS2 cam and run a Gen4 front timing cover with it's own cam sensor at the front. You'd then need to extend the 3 cam sensor wires to the front of the engine.
Will end up costing you money this way but you'd have no lack of CMP signal.

Sounds like I should be looking for an LS1/6 cam then... Anyone know the stock specs on the 5.3?

You can check the GEN III stickies for the exact specs which IIRC were diff-
erent for the 99 year only...but 2000 up I think were like 191-193 @ .050
so something like my 03 Vette cam @ 201/209 would actually be a one up
sorta RV cam for a budget 5.3. Mill the heads for a bit more compression to
compliment the added duration and have a happy hauler...not a barn burner.
If you're interested at all; I also have a set of LS6 yellow springs w/40K on
them to make a combo for ya.......JIM
