Default 1994 LT1 Swap into 1996 Questions

So I've been talking to a guy that has a 79,000 mile lt1 from a 1994 z28. We're negotiating the price right now but I hope to buy it. If I do end up buying it, what will I need to change to make it work in my 1996 z28? He's including the ecu with it. I know the Opti's are different and it's from an obd1 car if that makes a difference. Thanks for any input!

Edit: Just agreed on $530! I'm stoked to go check it out and pick it up

It should pretty much plug and play if you change the PCM

If you still need to pass emissions and would like to keep the better OPTI Then.......

you are going to swap the front cover, Crank reluctor, Hub, upper timing gear, and cam shaft over.

Oh no emissions doesn't matter here. But the thing is is that an opti isn't included with the motor. So you're saying to swap it to OBD1 and I wont have to change anything else?

Okay so I just bought the motor. We're pretty sure it's a 1993 LT1 though because the intake manifold, fuel rails, computer, and various other things are different from the lt1 motors in my friends shop where I'm keeping it for now.

Will a 93 motor cause even more issues then the 94-97 ones? I thought those engines had a LOT of differences???

There are a lot of differences. but I'm planning on just swapping everything from my 96 motor over to the 93 so I can keep my vented opti and obd2

Interested in feedback on this swap. I am by no means an expert, but I thought I have heard over the years that those 93 Motors are completely different then other years, from the block to the heads pretty much everything. But who knows. Hopefully its a easy swap for you.

The only things different about the 93 LT1 motors engine-wise is that the intake manifold doesn't have the front fuel cross-over tube - that's it. This means that the intake manifold can only be used with 93-year fuel rails. The heads and bottom end are similar to every other year LT1.

Of course there are other differences about the 93s but most are superficial and easily changed and/or removed and are not that big of a concern.

Why do a lot of sites say 93's are basically untunable?

They are not "untunable." 94+ PCMs use flashable memory while 93s use a "chip" which must be burned (more time-consuming and requires specialized equipment).

Ahh okay that would make a lot more sense. Lots of misinformation out there. And I would reuse the 93 computer but the guy I bought it from didn't take his time at all removing it from the engine bay. Everything is cut including the wiring harness

93 has 22# injectors, 94 & up have 24#. If you don't want to reroute the fuel lines to the front of the intake you might want to install the 96 intake with fuel rail and injectors and have some assurance about resealing the intake against oil leaks at the rear while it's out.

Also, the knock sensor will need to be swapped over
(passenger side of the block, round thing just above the starter)

Oh I didn't know the injectors were smaller as well. I will be swapping my intake and fuel rails over as well and selling the 93 stuff probably. I just think it looks better that way. And the previous ownee even broke the knock sensor while they were tearing the motor out.

i just did what you did but backwards. i bought a 1997 lt1 for my 1994. best thing to do is get the motors side by side and start swapping. it gave me a chance to swap out all the seals and gaskets while i was in there. nice thing about being gm is that everything is interchangable.
