6 Speed Differeces?
Noob here. I'm looking into buying a gto and have looked at a few 6 speeds already. I've noticed that in the 2004 GTO the shifter was very crisp when entering and trying to find gears, much like c5 z06. I also checked out a 2005 and 2006. Both of these had decent about resistance and were very spongy (only way I can explain it) when trying to put the shifter between the shift gates.
Is there a know difference between the shifting feel of the 04 and the 05+? If so is there a way to make the 05+ shift more like the 04 or corvette?
Thanks

I am not aware of any differences in the shifter or the linkage. I replaced my stock shifter with the GMM rip shift (race version). It is not cheap, but the shifts are clean, crisp and direct. One of my favorite mods. You are rarely going to get a stock GTO shifter that feels anything other than mushy/sloppy.

Ah so they all feel like crap? Yeah it was mushy and didn't go back to center like a shifter on a stock civic for instance.
If that's the case a shifter will have to be the first mod. How anyone can drive with that mush box i'll never know.

^^ I agree, stock is crap. I have the Hurst Billet in my GTO and it's OK, better than stock. I have a MGW in my WS6, and it's great. I'll be getting the MGW for the Goat soon, great shifter.

If you say "gto", "shifter", and "crisp" in the same sentence I can guarantee that you're not talking about a factory shifter. haha
If you get a six-speed, just figure you'll be buying a shifter as your first mod. The factory shifter is a "knife in a mustard jar" and should have NEVER been on a performance car.

A Lou's Short Stick is a real cheap and good alternative to the expensive full shifters. Big difference from the stock, but I'm sure it not the same as the ones mentioned above. just throwing it out there for people like me whose cars see street shifting 99% of the time and wanted a "better feeling shifter" with out shellling out $250+ on a shifter.

I have the b&m, its better than stock (bushings were completely worn, so it was very sloppy), but I'm not completely satisfied with it. Feels pretty notchy and doesn't center itself properly. Its getting the job done for now but I plan to eventually upgrade to the mgw. I'm going to get the tick clutch m/c first though, its a pain to get into first& reverse, I usually just start from second.

B&Ms have probably the highest breakage rate of any shifter I've seen posted on the last 8 years. "Notchiness" however is not in the shifter as all are free pivoting ***** with no gates, that's in the transmission.
