Hi guys, to make this quick I will keep this as to the point as I can. My car currently makes 470whp, and will be making around ~495whp this summer. I currently have 4.10s, but really don't track my car all that often. The 4.10s are cool, pretty much eliminates any bog from a dig, but I tend to do highway pulls more than anything. With that said, "trap speed" is what I am really looking for. With my stock 3.42 gears 3rd gear seemed to take forever (I was shifting at like 110-115ish which is way too tall), so I am thinking a 3.73 gear might be best. What are everyone's thoughts on a good highway gear? 3.73s the right one? Like I said, I am really looking for best MPH, not ET.

I would go look at an online calc and plug in all your specs and see what gear ratio suits you best. The highest ratio you can go and do as little shifting as possible is going to get you the best mph. I personally dont thik I would go trough all the trouble and money of a gear swap just to go 3.73's.

Imo 4.10's to me are fun but not the best at the track because they are fragile and on the street I feel like I shift way too often. I just swapped in 3.90s about a month ago and I like them a lot. My cruise on the highway only jump a little over 200 rpm. I went from 1750 at 80 to 1950 at 80 now with 3.90s. On the street they feel good, 1st gear is still usable and I dont light up the tires as easy as I would with 4.10's.


Also the 3.90's use the same size pinion gear as 3.73's so they are a little stronger than 4.10s.My vote goes to the 3.90s in case you were wondering lol.

Is that really true though, has anyone tested gears side by side to see if that is the case? I am going through the traps at about 6500 in 4th, and "only" trapping about 122. My buddy with similar power but 3.73s trapped 124. I had a faster ET, but still he had the better MPH.

Anyone else with other opinions? Thanks.

I should clarify when I said highest I meant highest numerically with having the least amount of shifts. Again I'm not sure on the specs of your buddies car but he may be shifting less than you are. Shifting time is down time and non accelerating fully time so there will be some loss in mph there. Also does his car weigh less than yours? So many things come into play when comparing 2 car's trap speed its hard to pinpoint exactly what causes it.

Talk to hio on here he had 4.10's and stepped down to 3.90s, because he no longer had to go to another gear and wasnt banging the rev limiter through the traps he gained mph.

Just picking a big gear isnt the best choice. Picking the the gear the optimizes your time in the high rpm and keeps you shifting the least is what you want.

My car has 3.73 rear gears stock and at 125mph 4th gear is still pulling. I think it'll get you what you're looking for.

Both of us finish the 1/4 mile in 4th gear, me being at a higher RPM than him obviously. His car is a bit lighter, but mine makes a bit more power. Either way, both of us trapped 98 in the 1/8th, and he picked up more MPH on the back half of the track, which is counter-intuitive since I make more HP. Anyway, I am trying to make the car a bit more "highway friendly" for pulls, so I think 3.73s are the better choice for me. Not sure yet though.

youre not the only one. i mostly highway race and want taller gears.(currently on 4.10s) im thinking about 3.73's myself
