Trans AM advice needed
I am new to the F body world and looking to purchase a 2000 trans am that i found on the local craigslist. The car has an auto tranny in it, how can i identify which automatic transmission is in it or was there just one option of trannys for this particular car. Also is the stock rearend in these cars dependable for drag racing on a very mild setup (headers, lid, exhaust).
Are there any other specifics that i should look for when i go to look at the car?

Only one automatic was offered in these cars; the 4L60E. That's the only one it could be if the car is stock, although there are several other transmissions that can be made to fit with some customization.
With an auto trans, the stock rear usually lasts a long time. The manual trans guys will tell you that the stock rear is junk and that it can break even at stock power levels. This is true, for a manual. For an auto, if you can keep wheel hop away (good shocks, aftermarket control arms and/or relocation brackets if needed) then the stock rear should hold up for a very long time at bolt-on power levels. I had no issues drag racing on my stock 7.5" 10-bolt with a cam, headers, basic bolt-ons, 3500 stall converter and drag radials. Many 1.6x launches and years later, the stock rear was just fine.

Thanks for the reply, that's what i was hoping to hear. If i would purchase the trans am it would most likely spend a couple weekends a month at the drag strip.
Here is the car I am going to look at, what are your thoughts?

I agree with the others, it sounds like someone's former race car, returned to mostly stock to be sold.
I guess it would be OK if you were looking to build it back to primarily being a race car for yourself. For a weekend cruiser or daily driver I would most likely pass on this one, but that's just my preference.
