Default Project Schnitzel Getter: LQ4 S475 Mercedes w124

theres a bit of a long story to how this started but basically, lent a mate some cash to go pick up a boat he had bought on an impluse bid and I ended up with a 6.0 truck motor - so armed with a motor I also on impulse decided to try to build a 10second car for about $10k (ok maybe that would be easy in the states but it's much trickier here in New Zealand)

the plan is
1994 320e mercedes
2005??? LQ4
ARP headbolts
Stock pistons with gapped rings (28thou?)
custom cnc ground cam from kelford cams with new valvesprings+pushrods
borgwarner S475 96mm/1.32 hotside
megasquirt 2
80lb or 95lb injectors
twin 044 pumps
air to air intercooler
water/meth injection
rebuilt powerglide with 3000+stall
running on 98ron pump gas
a bunch of other stuff to come im sure

fox bodys and 80's camaros are spendy here so after considering various australian and jap chassis I found a really cheap panzer tank for $2200nz pesos. 190,000km and pretty much everything still works and it drives really nice. cheap, unassuming, has decent brakes, handles high speed well and should have enough room in the engine bay and a decently strong diff (210mm ring gear) bit of a ??? on how the cv's and axles will hold up (it's IRS) but will be fun finding out

the germans obviously knew we would want to swap the engine and designed the bonnet hinge such that you can flick some toggles to make it go veritcal

3.2L 24v six, goes pretty good but sorry just not going to be enough!

six point oh

truck wiring loom is a total guts of thing

deloomed

headless

ls2 style? beefier rods and fully floating pistons

.

standard glide from a 66 malibu covered in muck

not sure which hat to wear?

had my mate matt help me with putting the megasquirt together and sorting out an engine loom - stripped the lq4 loom which had 1001 unneccesary wires and taking a bit of time to pull out the rubbish from what we actually need

for some reason the motor does not need this stuff but chevy thought it did

looming

the current coffee table conversation pieces

testing the MS2

mates folks just came over from the states so got them to bring a bunch of stuff, new headgaskets, arp bolts, some bits for the powerglide. got a few more things come and have a freind at kelford cams here in christchurch making up a custom cnc ground cam for the build.

Main holdup with the drivetrain is looking to be getting a decent convertor - I've emailed 3 companys so far and no one seems to want to take my money! I thought that was only a new zealand trait, being too laid back to be bothered enough to do bussiness!

Loving this thread! I've thought about doing something quite similar (well, not with a glide, but that's ok), so I can't wait to see how this progresses!

Handles high speed well is definitely true. I had a w126 that i bought for $760 that had been sitting at least 10 years and it would do 115mph on the freeway all day without a single rattle squeak or vibration.

I love builds like this and I can't wait to hear this one

Yeah unfortunately there were a few issues

was gonig to have to cut the trans tunnel to hell and the steering stuff/crossmember/anti roll bar turned out to be in more difficult locations than I had bargained for when I ran the tape over everything more closely. It would be doable (anythings possible) but became more than I could be bothered with so I ended up finding a different kind of merc/piece of **** foxbody to put it in, which while nothing new on this forum really is quite rare in this country, and somewhat ironically the antithesis of the w124 really

so A: spend more money on a much worse car but probably go a little faster

completely stripped out, not a wire left or anything else. Just have to wash the worst of the oil/road grime/paddock bash dirt off then take it to the sandblasters to get the floor blasted inside and underneath + the engine bay and a few bits of rust here and there.
then get it back to fab the subframe connectors/chassis/suspension reinforcements and get the cage built.
