Default stock LY6 longblock mild build, re-gap rings and head studs or leave alone?

i have a 2009 LY6 with 60k miles on it. building a mild turbo setup for it and am curious if i should bother taking the heads off, gapping the rings and doing head studs.

i will only be running 8-10lbs of boost. it has a LS3 intake and will get a custom cam. turbo is a s475, normal stuff. just shooting for 550-600hp on pump gas.

so leave it alone, or break it down?

thanks
mike

quick question along the same lines as OP. To gap the rings what else is needed? rod bolts, bearings?

I always do rod bolts and re-gap. But if I was going to do only one, the re-gapping is needed first. Its needed less on a high mile engine, but on low miles I've seen what happens when you dont re-gap first hand. (ring land popped and also cracked the cylinder wall too)

Good luck.

i just did, thanks. forgot to check back on there. well i suppose i'll stop avoiding it and do it. which sucks cause i've never done it and don't want to mess it up. guess it's time for more researching.

thanks

Mike it is easy and straight forward, search around alittle maybe check on youtube. Too many good running engines are lost from not checking and opening up the rings.

I have just under 3000 miles on my 08 LY6 originally had 58k miles, Ive run 10-12psi the whole time with no issues, stock rods bolts and head bolts and ring gap. If you really arent going to go over that then dont even consider doing anything.

It is not the amount of boost that will get you per say, it is the one time getting the cylinders hot. Boost pressure is not what butts the rings.

ive ran about 18psi on my 2008 4.8 with about 10k miles on the motor. the motor is pretty much new. no problems here. i left everything alone on the motor. just changed the valve springs/pushrods/cam and gave it hell, this is on e85 though. keep the timing low and itll live.

IMO As was mentioned I do not mess with the ring gap on high mileage engines. I would at the very least pull one piston and check the gap. If it was less than .024 I would re gap to .028. If it is already .022 I would just leave them alone and throw on a set of LS9 gaskets and be done with it. At the very least I would check one though.

Quick Reply: stock LY6 longblock mild build, re-gap rings and head studs or leave alone?
