Default how to pick a converter stall

I have a 98 camaro ls1. The trans is getting rebuilt and I need to pick a converter size. The car only has bolt ons and it is my DD. Should I stay stock converter or a step up? I have never put a stall on a car that was not built with a big cam.

Definitely ditch the crap stock stall. Don't even think hard about this one. 3600-4000 is perfect...a lot of guys who have went with a 3000 or 3200 usually always wished they'd went bigger. 4000 DD here.

How high does it rev on take off with a stall and how did you run your trans cooler. Did you run it with the stock cooler or by its self.

I would go 3200 for a build such as yours. It will behave like stock in most scenario's and really lay it down when you want it to!

sorry to bring this thread back up but i have a question as well. I will have a stock cam, a hooker muffler and a 100-150 shot of nitrous. Should i get a 11.5 with a 3200 stall? That sounds about right to me and will be a DD. Thanks for your help.

Default Stall size

I also would like some advice on picking a stall size. I asked about it in a thread I started on my 99 hugger orange ls6 build but I didn't get any replays. I was told I have a .581/.588 114 +4 comp cam on my ls6 with 5.3 cnc ported heads. I was thinking around 3500 until I talked to the local transmission shops. They told me they would stay with the smallest stall possible to avoid heat. This car is a daily driver that will only see the track a few times a year. Thanks for advice!

Any stall will require an aftermarket transmission cooler. Get a big cooler and you don't have to worry (just pay attention to trans temps). I'd say anything between a 3400-4000 would be good for you, just on your tolerance since it's a DD. I wouldn't go over 3800 for a DD but the difference between a 3800 and a 4000 (with = STR) is basically nothing.

Is there a certain trans cooler I should look into? Or just any aftermarket cooler. I am also going to put a deep b&m pan on it to help keep it cooler. The Yank converter in my 01 is a 3k and it does not feel big enough in my opinion. But this is the first aftermarket stall I have ever had.

You should have a cooler even with a 3K. You're just killing your transmission without a cooler. Rule of thumb for coolers is bigger is better. There are generally 2 styles. Tube and fin and plate style. Plate style are constructed better and are more efficient so they're better but they're more expensive. Coolers are rated with either GRVW (gross vehicle weight) or BTU. Higher the number in either case the better. I personally have a Hayden 679 cooler, it cost under $70 off Amazon and it's a decent size but there are bigger. Some of the bigger ones don't come with install hardware that you'll need. There are tons of trans cooler threads on here you can search for to see what other people use.

I wasnt implying that my 01 doesnt have a transmission cooler.. I was saying I dont think the stall is big enough. This car was already setup like this when I bought it. It does have a trans. cooler mounted to the radiator , I just dont know what kind or how big since I didnt buy it. I didnt know if there was somekind I should look into other than the radiator looking type.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Instead of wasting your money on a B&M pan a lot of guys just run a truck pan. I think it holds a quart more than your stock pan. I also believe it can be had for around $20 at your local GM dealer.

Size of stall depends on what your plans are? DD, street/strip or just strip? From what I have read I wouldnt mess with anything lower than a 4000. Me personally i'm going to run either a 4200 or 4400 and it will be a street/strip car.

I already have a b&m that I got with a wrecked Camaro that I bought for parts. But that would be a good to know about the truck pan. The car is a DD and will only see the dragstrip a couple times a year. Biggest concern is to keep it VERY streetable. 4000 just seems really big to me. I could see it for a drag car, but not for a DD. I thouht 3500 would be pushing it!

You can't go wrong with FTI, I just ordered my 3800 stall from them yesterday. I stopped by their shop and was very impressed with what they had to say. Greg & Troy were very knowledgable and helped me decide what converter to choose.

I've see tons of fast cars running FTI converters at Orlando Speed World. To say they've proven themselves is an understatement.

I put thousands of miles on my 4l60e with an fti 3000 lugging around with 3.27's. I def have a cooler now, but you don't need to do it the day of the install. I would if you got it apart.
