CA smog tests the emissions and if it fails they should tell you what it needs to pass and there are rules that govern how much they can charge for the labor, etc. This is very very common to fail emissions there, which is why you should just buy a lid and cat back only - NO TUNE. I lived there for 18 years and am so happy to be out of that communist state, the testing computers communicate with the State computers, they know when you fail. I'd let the testing shop perform the 'repairs', because if they can't get it to pass they will pass it anyway by taking the car out of neutral or park and putting it into drive, lowering the rpm's and getting a pass from the computer - at least that is the only way they got one of my cars to pass smog before I moved.

has your MPG dropped? because my 98 ss failed the same thing. all i did was clean the TB MAF with MAF cleaner of brake cleaner.(all do the same) and got a new K%N filter i think i replaced the spark plug cables and it passed flying colors.

The front o2 should look something like that. Narrow band o2 sensors can only detect 14.7:1 air:fuel, so the computer has to contiually make the mixture alternate between rich and lean (though in a very small window).

to pass smog, make sure your air filter and maf are clean, ck the plugs, if worn replace them and make sure to get that thing hot on the drive into recheck. Like a quick trip down the highway.
