Default 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sedan (6.0 4l80E)

Ok guys I have been around the forums for a while.. I spend most of My time here in the conversions and hybrids section. Anyway Im looking to build a very simple looking LS powered car. I chose a sedan because most coupes have been done and the sedan kind of fills the sleeper part of this build nicely.

Im looking for a simple swap I can take on Myself and this platform gives me plenty of room which hopefully will make for less fab work..

Drive train will be a 6.0/4l80E. Keeping fuel injected. Bone stock until I get all the bugs worked out. Maybe H/C and nitrous later.. I plan on buying a whole running donor vehicle.. 3500 express or a 2500 pickup and using every part I can.

Car will see track mostly qtr. mile but is mainly just being built for Holley LS fest and maybe a power tour or two...

My main question is .... Is this a cool swap or a waste of a LS powerplant?

I like it. Should be a fairly easy swap.

Ok well I'm with it.. So thats 3 of 3... I will post some pics of the actual car in the am..
From what I hear a stock 4L60E is pretty weak.. Is this true for the most part?

I dont plan on going crazy with this build.. Maybe a max goal 400 whp... If I get there easily I may go for 500 eventually.. Do I really need a 4l80E?

If you are planing on getting a donor truck/van it will already have the 4L80E in it and I would use that. I know this car will weigh less than the donor but it will still be heavy with 400-500HP pushing it. I would go 80 and not think about a 60. I have a 60 in my S10 and when it goes I'm doing a 80 swap.

If it's pushing metal down the road and making noise it's never a waste!

Agree with above. If you are going to be making 400-500hp I would recommend the 4L80E as well. Definitely going to be a sleeper. Good luck with it. Questions welcome.

That's grandma-riffic. It's a win/win, you'll never have anyone whine about cutting it up and you've saved it from death at a demo derby.

Did that one get cursed with the 260 Olds?

Actually it has the 350 Olds which Im sure in its day would lay down a whopping 100 whp..

Ok questions start.......

Now

I found a decent deal on 2001 5.3 100k ....so I will probably be picking it up soon..

Will all Year 4l80e transmissions work this engine? If not which will?

Also Ive been trying to figure out this whole mechanical speedometer conversion thing.. If I run digital gauges will I still need any kind of conversion kit or adapters for the 4l80e?

Those tailshaft conversion prices are a bit too much for my budget.. Ive been playing with the idea of using the stock th350 for now or atleast as long as I keep the granny gears in the rear end.. Opinions

I read so many conversion threads today My head is spinning...

Anyone running a vendor bought standalone harness?

Money and time wasted on a swap is inversely proportional to the amount of time you spend researching, seeing and asking what worked for others.

80E will bolt up to any LS motor. Half the pleasure of a LS swap is getting a modern OD trans that shifts when and how you tell it to, every time. Unless you have the not common dual pattern case you have a BOP pattern TH350.

Starting with a complete unmolested harness it's really not that hard to get working for conversion use. If you haven't found it already lt1swap.com is often referenced as a guide.

I agree with 71403, one of the under-appreciated aspects of the swap is that you can run the electronic overdrive transmission. I would recommend going with the 4L80E or 4L60E and if budget permits down the road, run a dual purpose tailshaft housing for your speedometer. Just my 2 cents.

Ok I picked up a 01 5.3... Here are some pics..

Yes its dirty... I will get some clean naked pics of it later this week...

Also picked up some f-body manifolds..

Ok so I have my eyes on a 1995 4l80e trans.. Is this gonna bolt right on?
Do I need a different flywheel or an adapter of some type?

Also need a driver side valve cover... If you have one laying around PM me...
