Moving my thread over from the LS1 section since I am now building an LS2

I went from wanting to do a HCI LS1 to a 383 LS1 to 402 LS2. Since my LS1 is low mile, 29K miles, I have decided to leave it alone and just sell it and use that money towards the price of a new LS2 block. I have a guy buying my LS1 for $2000.00 to put in a Thirdgen Camaro. I went on and ordered my block and all the other parts I need to complete it.





All these parts cost me $1600.00 with my GM supplier discount. Since I would only be using the LS1 block to build a 383 and all the parts from it are not worth very much by themselves, it just made since to leave it alone. Also the price of the 383 and 402 rotating assembly's are the same.

I have a set of 799's that have been sent off to Total Engine Airflow, very fortunate to live right down the street from Brian Tooley he is helping me out with that. The heads will get their stage 2 port job with Ferrea 2.04 intake and 1.57 exhaust valves. I will also be buying my rotating asymbly from Brian Tooley Racing. All forged of course.

I jumped the gun and bought an LS6 intake which will more than likely go up for sale so that I can but a Fast 102.

Got some goodies today. New LS2 block and all the parts to complete it. I also ordered my rotating assembly. The block looks really good, no defects that I can see. I had read stories of guy buying new blocks and having issues with them.

When I did my 402, I just ordered the short block from TSP. Trusted them to do all the assembly more than me. It has been rock solid for over 4 yrs now. I went with their MS3 cam and TF225s. Good combo for doing track days. Brian was a big help when I broke a valve spring - good guy to live close to. Good luck with build.

What kind of compression are you running? I am having a hard time picking a cam. Trying to get my dynamic compression where it needs to be, plus quench...etc

Mine is right at 11.2. The MS3 actually has a little more lift than I should be running for road racing, but too late to change now.

I am going to check to see if the deck on my new block is square and to see how much the pistons come out of the hole. If the block is square I am going to leave it alone. Right now I am just using a rough guess that the pistons are between .006 to .007 out of the hole. I plan on running a .040 thick Cometic gasket. My pistons are Wiesco flat tops. If I have to deck the block much then I can change to the GM .051 gasket.

I have some of my parts in, so i am just making a little update. Block and rotating assembly are at the machine shop. Block in being honed .005, rotating assembly is being balanced. My heads are kind of in limbo right now at TEA, apparently their cnc machine is broke. I still have a lot to do before I am ready for them anyway.

Thanks, waiting on block to come out of the machine shop...was suppose to be done last week, but didn't hear anything. have not really been in a hurry but this nice weather is making me a little anxious to get it back on the road.

Still waiting on heads too, they have been at TEA for over a month, was told the CNC machine they do these heads on was broke.

No, its a HOSS, my cell phone makes it look red in the pictures. Here I am at LS Fest last year.

Going to give the LS7's a shot, I already have them and should be fine with the cam lobes, and springs I am running. The LS7's catch a bad rap, because of other valve train issues cause them to break, when the lifter is really not the problem.

I will be curious to see, I have been debating on building my own 427 or going with a long block. Scoggin Dickey gave me a great price and it's hard to beat. Just looking at what other guys are doing and the cost when it's all said and done.
Looks like a great build man and I can't wait to see what she puts down!

Around $7255, sold stripped down LS1 with a 4L60E I had for $3000, I had about $500 in the 4L60E rebuild, so I made around $2500.

$7480 - $2500 = $4980

I already have new LS7 lifters, still need pushrods after I measure. Still need to get everything out of the machine shop.

Thats not bad bro, that seems really cheap from the heads that was just for the port work though correct? and selling your old set up helped offset some of the cost. I sold my Performabuilt 4l60 for almost what I paid and i have a 56k mile ls1 that I can't seem to give away even though I have all new parts and gaskets for it. Guess it will be a garage ornament for awhile. Or with 2 DD F-bodies i guess it will be a spare LOL
This looks like a top notch build for sure bro, I am still a few months out I am still in the process of saving.

Well you can add the valve springs to the price of the heads, since most come with the springs installed.
