There are many threads on the question of rebuild kits. Here are two:

IMHO (and I am no expert), the input shaft is one of the last things to worry about. However, performance builders often install the Sonnax Input Drum Reinforcement Kit (#77733-01K) which then also requires an old-style aluminum forward piston (Sonnax makes a billet one - #77764-01).

I've been told that the output shaft if more likely to break than the input shaft, which makes sense since the trans is multiplying the torque, especially in 1st gear. Billet output shafts ($500) and input shafts ($400) are available.

I would very highly recommend at least a updated Sunshell, 7 or 8 friction 3-4 clutch and the TransgoHD2 shift kit or at least a .490/.500 boost valve.

How much power are you planning on? Any adders?
I've been told that Nitrous is especially hard on a 4L60E.
