Default Turbo decision help: single, twins, bb, journal, oil-less?

Hey all, I’ve been racking my brain about turbo selection and was curious about your opinions. I have a 370” LS2 w/LS3 top end, LS9 cam, 9:1 comp that will be going into my ’72 Cutlass. I’m not looking for max power, maybe 700ish at the wheels with the ability to turn it up a bit more if I get a wild hair. This will be a street car, might not ever see a drag strip but may take her to a road course to throw around the twisties. I’d like to have minimal lag and quick response and was told at one point twin 57 journal bearing turbos were the way to go. I’m fine with that but can I get a pair of slightly larger BB turbos or a single oil-less turbo and still have boost come on down low and good top end punch? I’m a FI newb and tend to overthink things like this so, yeah lol Thanks in advance, James

Auto or manual? Twin TC76s will do work in a auto. No need for BB, spend that money elsewhere.

Twin 76s? Where do you guys come up with this stuff? He wants ~700 Hp with quick spool, not 1500+ Hp capable with slow spool.

OP, a single billet 76 will get you over 700 HP (and even 800 if you decide you need that extra oomph) to the wheels with a fast spool, especially on a 370". If you want to take it on the twisties, this is a great sized turbo, as you'll get spool at a low enough RPM to pull you pretty hard out of the corners.

LOL, good luck with your back pressure goals of 2013 and beyond if you go this route.

really.

My bro has a car with twin 5862's on an APS kit. stock 6L. making 785. back presure is 1:1.2 so ....... come again???

guess what........... thats is more power than his goals.

with the proper set up you dont need HUGE ******* turbos to make power.

Thanks for the info guys, though I didnt mean for this thread to turn into a pissing match. texas, when asked if the turbos in redsled were TC76s the owner replied: "Nope. They are T-series billet 76s with 68mm exhaust and .81 housings." Though, not really sure how that compares to twin TC76s

im running a AES 390 with twin turbonetics TC 66/65's on a .68 a/r. my builder said they will spool instantly and make over 1000rwhp fyi. its not built yet so i dont have any concrete answers, just going by what AES has told me.

They are the same, except the T series have a larger compressor housing, you'll benefit by going with the TC series as they'll spool a little quicker in your setup. If you want them in billet, the upgrade is not that much on them as well.

Just my .2. People are scared to go with bigger turbos, not sure why. You said 700, but also said you'd want to turn it up in the future... buy turbos once.

Thanks texas, good to know. And by turning it up I mean maybe another hundred hp. Not looking to break 4 digits or anything, I'm sure 700 will be quite a handful and turn my tires into an instant puddle of smoldering goo.

After a little digging the PT7675 sounds pretty promising for a single. Anyone have experience with this one?

Make sure you start a build thread brother. Big fan of the '72's. I was initially going with twin T70's on my 5.3 but was told even with ls6 intake and cam, it would be a turd as far as spooling so I set them aside to put on my 6.0 and am going with a T4 88mm turbo of questionable brand. My goal is 700 to the wheels with the ability to turn it up to 1000 just to say been there done that.

Better in that there is more HP potential because of the bigger turbo?

kaine, here is my build thread, though I've been in a holding pattern on updates since I went on vacation and now while I work on the frame:

I just got rid of this turbo to run twin PT6262's. I think it's a little small for a 370. Probably the best turbo out there for a 346 though.
