K, so thought I'd be installing my rebuilt t56 tomorrow but the shaft is hard to turn after torquing the tail housing bolts. Spins easily until torqued. Replaced all races, bearings,synchronizes, and cluster gear. I'm a first timer with tranny repairs so any help would be much appreciated, as my mind is racing, and may rip my hair out. Thus is my daily driver Camaro ss. p.s, when I turn it from output shaft, the input shaft also turns. But when turned from input shaft the output doesn't turn.. Normal??

Shimming is off most likely. When I first torqued mine down it was shimmed too tight and hard to turn. Second time was too loose and third was on the money. :-)

^^ exidous is on the money. your bearing preload is off.

K, there is only two shims and they're by the input shaft. Should I just take them out altogether?p.s thanks for the quick responses!

There are three. Two on the adapter plate and one on the tail housing for the counter shaft extension.

You have to take them out to get a baseline with a dial micrometer. My play in one spot was around .035". To get preload I wanted .037".

You HAVE to measure and shim properly. Your trans will eat itself if you don't.

Ok, I see now.. And you're right! I can get a shim kit for forty bucks. So only downer is having to wait for shipment. Thanks again though!!
