4l60e trans in bad shape
Ok my car is a 1997 formula with a lt1/4l60e. I posted in the brakes sction because the way it sounded i was almost positive thats what it was. So ive been going through my front brakes trying to narrow it down. After about the third day i finally jacked up the rear end, put the car on jackstands, and put it in gear. The noise was louder than ever. so i stuck my head kinda under the car and the noise was sounding like it was the transmission. I got behind it and lookeed down the car to see if the driveshaft may have been rubbing, but it wasnt. Like i said ive never heard a trans sound like brakes dragging so any help would be appreciated if its nothing simple im just going to bite the bullet and swap a t56 into it.

I assume then the noise only occurs in Drive and Reverse?
That could be the rear output shaft bushing, or other bushing.
Unfortunately that requires a complete disassembly.
If the sounds only occurs in 1st and 3rd gear, then it could be a completely worn out band, but again that requires a disassembly. I'm not an expert, I could guess all day, but I think the result is always the same.

Yes it only does it in reverse and drive. And i never payed attention to what gear i was in but it does stop between around 20 mph and 40 mph and then starts back up again.

Since it does appear to depend upon the gear, a completely worn band is certainly a good possibility. For any major work on a 16 year old 4L60E, you will want a complete rebuild which will include all new bushings, bearings, frictions and band. If my hypothesis is correct, you will need a new Reverse drum too; some rebuild prices include that, some do not. I'm almost certain that a 4L65E rebuild kit will work in your trans and give the benefit of a 7-friction 3-4 clutch. Add a new sun shell and a .490/.500 boost valve and you will have a durable trans.
