Does my Firebird have a LS1 or LS6 intake manifold?
Ok, so I've done a lot or research and everything I read says that my 01 Formula should have came with an LS6 intake from the factory. However, the owner of a local speed shop told me that mine car has an LS1 intake instead. Also, the sticker on my driver side door says LS1 on it (which he pointed out to me to confirm his determination). Does anyone have info or input on this? I don't know how to indentify the LS6 and LS1 differences. Can anyone help me out? Thanks a bunch.

Check the part numbers on the intake. On my LS1 intake it has 12560688 right in the middle on the passenger's side of the intake where the injectors go. On my LS6 it has 12573572 on the driver's side in the same place. However there are multiple part numbers for the LS6 intake, unsure about if there are multiples for the LS1.
Physically, the differences is that in the vast majority of cases, an LS6 will not have the provision for an EGR system. If you were to pull the intake and look at the bottom, the LS6 will be flat where the LS1 will have a hump running down the middle.
Here is a comparison of the bottoms. LS6 on the left.
And here you can see the LS6 on the left doesn't have the hole for the EGR.

Thanks for the info guys, unfortunately Im away right now on military orders, so I can't take pics of mine. I can say that my intake is flat on the bottom like the one on the left on the pic above. Ill post pics as soon as I get home.

you most likely have the LS6 intake, what would be interesting is to see if you have the LS6 block. Reportedly almost 25% of later Fbodies has. There were minor differences, but no real hp differences. When my engine gets taken out for rebuild this summer I'm gonna check!

Good to know. I really appreciate the help. I'm a walking, talking textbook when it comes to second generation F-Bodies but I'm still new to LS series F-Bodies.

Also, I'd really like to replace my stock LS1 camshaft with a LS6 camshaft. If I do that, then what style lifters, length pushrods and style rocker arms do you guys recommend I use?

there have been some write ups of the LS1 / LS6 blocks ending up on the same assembly lines due to the 2 facilities that were making them. GM thinks that up to 25% of 2001 - 2002 fbodies ended up with the LS6 blocks.
Lots of places to hunt for the facts, but the ls6 block had bigger cavaties for oil circulation, GM engineers did believe it held a few horsepower bonuses, but from everything I've heard or read it was minor.

Cool thing about having the LS6 block and LS6 intake, is you put on that set of 243's and might as well go bigger cam, you have a modded LS6 period. Now not sure if that means a lot, but just something trivial to chat about at car meets or shows.

It's not worth it, and this coming from a guy running a 224r. I'd get an actual aftermarket cam to make extra power off of but I've only seen one guy running an ls6 cam and the car was not fast by any means

RJDio is correct that the LS6 block number is 12561168. Here is a helpful link from Summit Racing with block numbers.

Thanks for the advise guys. If not the LS6 cam, then what do you recommend? I'm not looking to beat any speed records yet, just add some umph to it. Ive got the external engine mods covered, just like some advise as to change internally?

Def leave the LS6 cam to the swap meeters. I wish I could help you but I just don't know enough about cam choices, I have a small comp cam that works great with my 241's and stock springs. But I see guys create a new thread and listing their mods and asking for cam ideas, and the pros weigh in.
I'm taking the easy route, I'm looking into ported 243's, Fast 102/102, springs, engine refresh, and pro tune, hopefully by end of summer. I'm letting my builder recommend the bigger cam since he sees this stuff every day, and I only want to do this once more and do it right!

^your screen name is bad lol
I'm just running a little 224 and kinda wish I woulda went bigger but even in tuned I can see a big difference in the car. I just go after what I see a good deal on but make sure you get good valve springs and retainers
