Default max effort dont give a s--- timing

E85, what is the most timing you can get away with, that gains the most usable power. if it pops so what just wondering what the most anybody has got away with or at what timing the engine let go?
241 heads ported and with hot spots removed, stock short block 5.3 (02) ls2 cam, pt88 16psi of boost fully studded/arp rod bolts.
im at 18degs now. is this the limit or is there alot left on the table....

Keep bumping it up a degree at a time until it stops trapping higher mph.

I would but I have no cage in my car. (100% street car)I think it should run in the high 9s the way it sits. I dont think the track will like me to much after the first run..

Try adding a degree or two and log it if it knocks back off. If it doesn't try another.....I laugh reading yb treads those outlaw 10.5 guys run 40° @40psi Lol

Get a gps logger that does 5hz or 10hz then you can compare back to back 60-120 runs or whatever allows you to hook up on the street. I can tell a difference between a few degrees timing doing this.

^ DAMN. from the 14degs to the 18degs feels like 75hp, I could only imagine what another 10degs will do or will the extra hp feel drop off the higher the timing gets?

Poor mans v-box

qstarz 5hz recorder qstarz 5hz recorder

I always run it at the track and its always within one mph and one tenth. Has pretty decent software too.

That's the great thing about the e85, it stops making power a good ways before it gets dangerous.

if you have a dyno nearby, you can just add the timing in, and log the runs...when it stops making considerable gains per degree most people back off a degree or two and call it quits after they get the "number".

Just a visual example of what I have seen:

14* makes 575rwhp/543rwtq gain of 48
16* makes 623rwhp/562rwtq gain of 46
18* makes 669rwhp/584rwtq Average gain per degree 23.5rwhp for 2 runs.

20* makes 680rwhp/584rwtq gain of 11

^^ (usually stop here and dial back one degree on 91/93 octane cars on e85 its alot safer to stick with it)

22* makes 671rwhp/566rwtq---now your defeating the purpose.

so 18-19* is about prime time in this example. I would say 18* and then spray the methanol and go with more boost vs timing. At least that's what my noobish tuning skills would lead me to believe is best. This is just an example of what I have seen other tuners doing.

I am at 17 degrees and ran 6.07 on 10lbs of boost. Our fuel just changed this week from E51 to E80. The good news is more ethanol but now I have to figure out how much to change things without ruining my tune. I added a degree of timing since I have more ethanol now but figured that means it will run leaner. My tune was just a tad fat so I only added a number across the entire fuel table. My logs look great but I get a KR of 1.6 just around the shift to 2nd gear. Everywhere else it is zero. I do feel better knowing that guys are running waaaay more timing. Since I run the 5.3 heads on the 6.0 and my compression is closer to 10.5 I am NOT sure how much more timing is still reasonable. I plan to do what was mentioned and see where I stop picking up mph and back off a degree or two.

Also, NOT sure how high of a rpm is safe on stock bottom 6.0's but I have my shift light (now fixed) set at 6700. Turbo's will pull way past this point though.

Great thread.

Good thread, My car right now is at 15psi and 16* timing on e85. Ive been told that this is super safe?

Its a SBE 5.3 with rod bolts and head studs. 243 heads. lunati turbo cam

I just got the car and im a complete noob to everything about it LOL. FI, EFI, E85 never messed with any of them, im use to carbs and NOS.

The car has yet to make a pass or be on a dyno. Im gonna take it soon and have a pro look over the tunes and tweek as needed. It will be cool to get some power #'s too. Like the OP i have a feeling after about 2 passes i will get the boot as i have no cage or bar either.

lol I had all intentions of playing around on the street this weekend but its going to be f----- snowing again.

I have 2 cars here local that im trying to beat on the street, 1st one sbf mustang 10.7 on motor + spray if needed, the second is a 555bbc camaro runs 9.7 on motor + spray.(He could be a lil tuff)
The first car I think I can handle the second has been king of the street as long as I have been driving..

just trying to get the car up to the max effort before I get my *** handed to me.

I highly doubt you'll get your *** handed to you. If you can get her dialed in on max boost, I think you'll get her done. What I really want to see is how much power you're going to make on the bigger engine.
