consider installing a ASA cam,it works with stock GM yellow springs.consider harden push rods.how many miles on the short block?check Texas Speed for a ls2 timing chain and gaskets.

Yep. Got some already ported 243s bare. Its a budget build so looking at stock parts for cheap. Want to keep the stock springs BC I want the heads low maintenance (spring change interval) which is why I don't really wanna cam it either and not looking to rev over stock redline. Also I live in Cali and want to b smog legal... very important. Was considering an ls6 cam but heard the 2000 fbody cams are almost as good and its not worth it. My car has the 853 crappy heads on it now). Only thing I was thinking of upgrading was pushrods.
Also odo says 150k but I'm assuming engine was recently rebuilt due to condition and vacuum test. Doesn't burn any oil either and oil takes a long time to break down for oil change interval. I had a 50k 01 z28 2 years ago and this car feels stronger but it might be cuz my new ss is a m6 and z28 was an a4. But I'm just assuming I really don't know **** lol. Just experience with cars.

What condition are those heads in you got? low miles after the port job? how does the surface condition look like on them?
"cheap" doesnt belong in your build, budget however is ok as long as you don't skimp out on necessary parts.
So all your upgrading is from 853 heads to 243 ported? nothing else?

oh my fault "budget" lol. the heads have like 15k miles on em so im gonna have em resurfaced. maybe milled? what u guys think? bump up compression a little. and im also gonna put on an slp ls6 with egr intake with ls6 coolant lines and ls6 pcv valley cover i think theyre called as to get rid of the oil catch can. gonna cam it later when its not my dd. i figure with heads ill keep up the mpg while still on a budget. will i NEED a tune when swapping the heads and intake? i know a tune will maximize the mods but again im on a budget. i still wanna be able to spank some ricers and take it to wot without f'ing it up. can i do this without a tune?

I would advise to get a tune to get the maximum benefit of the mods that you've done.
yes you can mill your heads down a bit to bump up compression, use this link to help you pick the CR you want.
https://ls1tech.com/forums/advanced-...ume-vs-cr.html
since your keeping everything stock on your engine that list above should be accurate for you. but you can still double check Cr when you go to get your heads surfaced, just tell them your combo and what your aiming for..
the ls6 valley cover requires grinding a tab off inside the valley of your block with a dremel, just make sure you tape everything off really good so you dont get debris inside your engine..

Ill make sure to do that. What's a good CR for my setup that ill have with the 243s? And if I plan on a modest cam in the future... maybe a hot cam or something. Something that won't tear up the springs. Also what kind of gains should I expect from the heads and intake without a tune? Btw thanks for the patience.

Will an asa pass smog with my plans? Or should I get a custom grind? Looking for something that won't tear up springs and keep good street MPG if that's even possible. 02+ zo6 cam?

Well theres alot of good vendors that can custom spec you a cam to make good power and still have really good street manners, And if your worried about durability you can get a good dual spring kit with steel retainers that are much stronger than stock springs...
your not going to want to do those mods without getting a tune, it will just dissapoint you. I know you said budget but if your going through the trouble of taking the heads off, you might want to look into getting a cam as well and springs..
11:1 is a good NA CR, I wouldnt worry too much about that at this point in the game.

smog is diffrent for everybody, some people can pass with longtube headers and no cats i've seen? so I couldnt tell you.
I would hold off on putting your heads on until you can do a full Head/cam/spring kit with supporting mods such as a ls2 timing chain, ls6 oil pump, ls7 lifters, ls2 lifter trays, and a good tune...
it will cost a bit more but you will save money in the long run and will net you the power you are looking for...
goodluck
