First, I would say you need to clean your MAF. If that yields no results, unplug the sensor and start it. If the idle is smoother, the MAF itself may be the problem. And it wouldn't hurt to change the fuel filter if you haven't recently. Those would be the first three things I'd try, but I'm definitely not an expert.

Not necessarily, especially if it just needs cleaned. Try tapping on the housing with a screw driver while it's running. Not like super hard, but enough to "knock" to see if the element is out.

You either want this:

or this:

Just take the MAF out and spray on the entire inside of the sensor including the contacts and the honey comb. Stop spraying when it's just the clear fluid running out out of the MAF (not full of dark, dirty crud).

Tapping on the MAF... if the car stutters or even stalls when tapping, then wires inside the MAF are bad and it needs replaced. I would try cleaning it first, though.

Try checking to see if you have a vacuum leak. Buy a cheap gauge, hook in to a vacuum line, and see what it reads at idle. Let us know what it reads, should be about 15 inches. If not, you got a leak, which will cause all your symptoms. I would also change your fuel filter, cheap insurance. Next I would run a big container (the suv size) of techron injector cleaner thru, on an almost empty tank to get the concentration up. Lastly, you said you had a valve job. You may want to do a compression test if all else fails, and see if you have some leaking intake valves.. Best I can guess at the moment.
