Default How to tell if it is the fuel sending unit or gauge

Gas gauge reads "E", and when I put gas in, it read for only a moment, a 1/4 of tank, then dropped back down to "E". Then a light came on, "Check Gauges", then turned off, and then came back on again.

So, my question is, How do you know if it is the gas gauge itself or the fuel sending unit?

Any help will be greatly appreciate.

This is for a 2000 Firehawk.

99% of the time it is the level sensor. The wiper on the level sensor is rather delicate & is either worn out, dirty or corroded from moisture in the tank. You can measure the sender resistance at the tank to see if it is functioning.
