Default changed oil pressure sender...now way high oil pressure reading on guage

on a 2000 ls1...so what have I done wrong?
the battery negative was disconnected during replacement of sensor.sensor was plugged in...then negative to battery connected.
started right up after install BUT guage reads from center on up and back to center...never drops below center even at idle???????

right mow I have sensor plugged in (since I cant reach it!)

Are you saying the oil pressure is all over the place when at idle, or when you bring the RPM's up?

Cold running oil pressure should be approximately 60 PSI, and once it is warmed up it should be approximately 40 PSI.

no not all over the place...with key on and engine not running the guage reads 0

as soon as engine starts cold..guage goes between 40 and 80
as engine warms up guage drops towards the 40 and stays there even at idleif I rev it it climbs accordingly.
its like if the guage thinks 40 is 0.
the lower part of the guage is not used at all except when turning on the ignition but no engine running.

it seems to move properly with engine rpms just from 40 on up to like 65lbs

your gauge should never be at 0psi. If pressure reads 40 and up it should be good.

yes but 40 lbs of oil pressure at idle is incorrect.

The stock gauge is not very accurate. It's to be used as a guide to tell you that "yay i have oil pressure" and that's about it. 40 is fine.

It sounds like it is responding correctly to RPM changes.

What do you think it should be at idle? Both mine idle at around 35 psi hot and dont go much over 50 psi (aftermarket gauges).

I had to change the sender because I snapped it in two while taking out the intake to replace the 2 knock sensors....before that it would read closer to the left at idle and up to 40 when engine was revving. now it start in the middle of the range and goes to the right when revving .never drops bellow 40 .if this is ok then ive got tremendous oil pressure!!!

Your old, high mileage sender may have been passing some pressure through, and not giving a true reading (well as 'true' as the stocker can at least).

Sounds about right. I noticed mine reading a little higher when I replaced it. But 60 cold and 40 hot on the gauge is a pretty normal, at idle especially. If it were maxing out or not ever getting to 40 then I would assume the sending unit is shitty.
