Default What cam should i get?

Looking into getting a cam for my 05 GTO A4. I dont want anything radical, im just looking for something to wake the car up and get some more power out of it. Would like a setup that will get me that extra power and still keep ok gas mileage. Plus having that aggressive idle would be nice. Like i said nothing really radical, i don't want to have to change my torque converter. I have slp long tube headers, slp exhaust, vararam intake, and i plan on having a FAST inatke and TB combo. Plus if you guys have any ideas for improving the heads while im at it, any good heads out there for not to much $$$. Thanks!

well to be honest, you will get hundreds of different opinions and responces on this.. I would try and figure out your HP goals, how you want it to sound, and search the feed back that others give on specific cams as far as drivability (since you want to keep your stock converter). After researching all of this, you can pick off the cam that would make sense for you to have OR talk to someone who can custom spec a cam for your needs. As far as heads and intake, i would do the same thing. Just depends on the kind of power youre looking for and how deep your pockets are..

MY .02 cents : Get a 228r, they are proven to give good power and drivabilty and ofcoarse sound great. There is room for more power with a set of good heads/ intake aswell for the future. Also, i would look into a converter. I know you dont want one but you would be surprised at the difference they make .

^ good advice. I had a MS3 237/242 113lsa cam and I just recently swapped it out for a Futral F13 230/232 112lsa.

The MS3 is a screamer but it needed a 4000+ stall and tall gears. I have a SS3600 and I didn't want to change it as its really streetable. With the smaller cam I have way more low and midrange. Before with the MS3 it wouldn't start pulling from a 50 roll until it got up in RPMs then when I shifted it would fall on its face and slowly pick up again.

For a street car I like smaller to mild cams.

That being said you don't want to change your converter (which happens to be the best mod for an A4 performance wise). That's going to really limit your options.

Changing a converter isn't hard and I've done it twice. I'm no precessional mechanic. I'd really reconsider your decision as it will open up way more options.

If you're not willing to ask one of the cam gurus on this site to custom spec you something. Good luck.

Without a higher stall TC you'll need to go with a small cam, I'd go with a cam with at least -8* overlap or more! A few good examples would be: 220/220 114lsa(-8*), 216/220 113lsa(-8*), 214/218 112lsa (-8*).

Stock converter - stock cam. Period.

At least look into a 2800-3200, you won't ever notice it/the gains will be significant/will open your cam selection.

For what you are a looking for, a 3000 converter and a 224R would be perfect.

just looking for some good ideas. something that keeps driveability and decent gas mileage because i do drive it quiet a bit. i would just like to see some nice power gains, and a bit more aggressive sound. not looking to spend a fortune, just looking for the best bang for my buck.

You will hate driving with any cam that gives you a decent lope, picks up good power, and lets you run decent without a converter.

You have to have a converter.

Without a converter it will not be DD friendly with a cam that you are wanting.

Ive been looking into a 224R cam and it looks good, what LSA would you recommend 112 or 114? And i will be upgrading my valve train with new beehive valve springs and pushrods, what length pushrods should i go with? I will also go with a 3000 stall TCI converter, anything else i should do with the trans while i have it out? I think im going to leave the heads alone.

112 is what I would go with.

Measure for the pushrods, only for sure way of knowing.

Don't go with a TCI.. The lock up clutch is a POS and will make you hate it.

Shift kit/deeper pan are recommended but not mandatory. A cooler is mandatory.

I'd also look at the Futral F2, 224(.588")/224(.588") 112lsa, or Cam Motion #769, 224(.578")/228(.578") 113lsa+4.
