Default 2005 cts-v ls6 engine install questions

After a lifter failed causing me to tear the motor apart and spend a ton of money (and a lot of upgrades) I'm now ready to install the engine. Pulling it out I removed the transmission then the engine. Looking at it I feel like I may be able to put it all back in together, just wondering if anyone has done this and the best way to go about it. Also wonder if I can get away with putting the headers on before I put it in.

Essentially the more I can do while the motor is out the better. Thoughts and ideas welcome.

put the tranny in after the motor is in the car.. get the clutch and bellhousing on the motor and drop it in.. then the tranny just slides in.. youll have one hell of a time getting it in with the tranny on there. im sure it can be done with a lot of cursing and bloody knuckles though

Engine removal:

Step 1: Remove Engine.

Engine Install:

Step 1: See Engine removal step 1, and reverse the order.

Done.

Sounds difficult.

Guess I went my whole life without ever thinking of it like that.....

That being said you absolutely cannot remove the engine without either removing the transmission first, or possibly removing them as a complete assembly. That being said I removed the trans first. I was just hoping I could pop them in at the same time to make things nice and easy. But very helpful post you have :/

I put the LS3 in along with the trans all bolted together with accessories installed. No way headers can be bolted on until after the engine is in. I did the install from the bottom however.

I find the least stressful and easiest is to remove AND install with it all together (trans/engine together) ...

I personally like installing the trans after the engine is in but I have installed the engine and trans together as well. You have to have the have the car up in the air pretty good because it has to go in at a pretty steep angle to clear the radiator support.

You absolutely can remove the engine without removing the transmission, as I posted in your original thread.

Glad your project is nearing completion. What all have you done in the way of "a ton of upgrades"?

Ok I guess I should have been more specific, it cant be removed without lots of extra work (like dropping the steering etc) and the trans is just easier (for me) to remove especially with the things I'm changing. Upgrades/changes as follows:

LS7 flywheel, clutch, pressure plate and slave cylinder
Pacesetter headers with DEI titanium wrap, no cats
227/234 .613/.576 115+3LSA Comp Cam, dual valve springs, titanium retainers, new seals, chromolly pushrods
Comp Cams Trunnion Upgrade Kit
LS7 lifters, LS2 trays and timing chain
LS6 oil pump, all new main and rod bearings, piston rings
ARP rod bolts
All new GM gaskets/seals
MSD wires, 1 step colder NGK plugs
HPtuners tuning

Once up and going and broken in a 100 shot.

I'm biased, but I think it's a helluva lot less work. I loosened the 4 cross-member bolts, removed the 2 steering shaft bolts (so the shaft could extend a bit - it was never disengaged at all), and lowered the crossmember 1-1.5". As slow as I work, it would've taken me forever to fight with the exhaust, driveshaft, and transmission. I'm still surprised/confused that more folks don't do it the way I did.

That should be tons o' fun. I'm not a nitrous guy at all, so this may be a stupid question - is the longer exhaust duration but smaller lift (compared to the intake) a nitrous thing?

You may very well be right, I'm sure there is an easier way. Got the trans back on last night. Should finish up in the next couple days. Just doing a couple hours alone each night.

As for the cam it doesn't have anything to do with nitrous, its just about the biggest cam I am willing to run to maintain a nice drive. Basically left it to someone who does cams for a living and this is what we came up with. Hoping to have a fun time!
