Default 383 - What's Biggest Cam That Can Pass Sniffer?

383 - What's Biggest Cam That Can Pass Sniffer?

I know a 224 on a 114 is generally considered the limit for a 346.

What about for a 383 stroker?

I was thinking a 236 in a 383 stroker would be about the same as a 224 in a 346 is that reasonable?

In any case a 229 in a 383 should pass with a good tune & cats shouldn't it?

Thanks

Pro Stock John once mentioned a "12 degrees per 100 cubes" rule of thumb to try, I think - try searching a bit in the FI section, I think. I can't recall what number per 100ci it was.

With about half that cube increase, I guess a 230/230 on 114 might be similar?

No idea, just a guess...

Seems unreasonable to me. For that to be true, it would need to be true that, with the cam unchanged, increased stroke would give lower emissions. If that were true we Californians would all be driving cars with ten-liter tug boat engines.

I know smaller bore motors tend to burn cleaner than larger bore motors. Does increased stroke hurt as much as bigger bore does?

Thanks for the comments so far.

It has to do with idle quality. Bigger motors can run more cam without misfires at idle.

I think a 236/236 on 114LSA would pass easily with tuning and proper idle speed/timing changes in a 383 with good cats

kinda hard to say, you should be able to get away with a pretty good sized cam since there is no idle test anymore. What part of CA are you in?

I'm in North Carolina. The car it's going in is a 91 RS and I think most of the places will just sniff it rather than scan it since it's going in an older car.

The 236/236 Chris mentioned is starting to sound like a good choice!
